What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Really. Especially since Harry was so generic, his heritage was irrelevant. Just give him a Chinese/Taiwanese last name and you're good to go.

Could’ve called him Joe Smith and had him be a generic white guy and the character would’ve played exactly the same.

Since Kate Mulgrew got 'Nicole Janeway' to be renamed to 'Kathryn Janeway'

maybe

Garrett Wang could've got "Harry Kim" to be renamed "Gary Wang"?

Voyager made a lot of missteps that any reasonably intelligent producers should have been able to avoid. But, for whatever reason, didn't.

Producers aren’t the only ones making decisions in any given project, they have people above them they have to satisfy.

Giving Harry a last name appropriate to his heritage shouldn't have been an issue. Neither should following fandom rules by promoting him to LTJG at some point.

Yeah... the show runners, producers and writers of Star Trek should follow "fandom rules"....totally...

I can see nothing going wrong with that...

Every character introduced to the original series, the Next Generation, and Deep Space 9 either gained ranks, or was offered promotion but turned it down.

The only exception was Data on TNG; his progress was blocked by Riker and Picard's both refusing promotion (Riker refused two ships of his own, three if you count the Drake, Picard turned down becoming commandant of the Academy).

20 or so main characters, and only one exception. I call that a fandom rule.

Fandom has nothing to do with it, simply a trend in the shows. Didn’t Chakotay, Paris and Torres all finish Voyager with their original ranks as well?

Well they did sort of make Kirk a Mary Sue. Thanks to Shatner feeling insecure about Spock/Leonard Nimoy stealing the limelight from him.
