What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

In the TNG premiere Data was from the Starfleet Class of '78. By the end of the first season the year in which the series took place was firmly established as 2364. So unless Data is over a century old(spoiler: he wasn't) they retconned the calendar for the new series and did what TOS did. Adjust as it went along.

Actually they showed that a change in the calendar era that the years were counted from.

In "Encounter at Farpoint" Data graduated from Starfleet Acedemy in '78:

RIKER: Then your rank of Lieutenant Commander is honorary?
DATA: No, sir. Starfleet class of '78. Honours in probability mechanics and exobiology.

"Datalore" shows that Data had graduated after four eyars at the Academy, at least 13 to 15 years before the psiode, thus making the year at least.'91 to '93 of the century when Data graduated. It also said that Data had been found (in '74 or earlier) 26 years before "Datalore" which means the year would be no later than about '00 of the next century after Data graduated..

DATA: If you get one the way I did, Lore, it will mean four years at the Academy, another three as ensign, ten or twelve on varied space duty in the lieutenant grades.

DATA: I was discovered twenty six years ago.

And what does Data say about the year in "The Neutral Zone":

RALPH: What year is this?
DATA: By your calendar two thousand three hundred sixty four.

Who does Dat say used Ralph's calendar? The people of Ralph's era. Data does not say that the calendar of Ralph's era is still used by anyone. Since it uses a different calanedary era than the calendar Data uses, it is probably not used much on Earth in the first season of TOS.

Ralph and the others return to Earth sometime after the end of the episodes. And they probably become some sort of celebrities in some sort of media on Earth.

I suppose that the United Earth government probably usually handles serious business. But sometimes it handles more symbolic matters. I guess that various pressure groups would want to change the flag, or coat of arms, or anthem, or calendar, of United Earth to make it fit their varous agendas. And sometimes those pressure groups would succeed in make a change.

So I guess the fame of the revived dead would help a pressure group strying to make Ralph's calendar the United Earth Calendar, and they would succeed. Thus the United Earth would get a new calander, or at least a new calendar era that the yeara were counted from. And thus dates in later episodes in the TNG era were consisted with using Ralph's clanedar era.

The writers of TNG may not have planned to show one calendar era being replaced by another one, but that is what they actually showed happening in TNG.

So that inspired me to go back and look for the use of different calendar eras in TOS, and now that I was looking for it, I noticed several examples.

So it is my belief that several different calendar eras are used in various productions, and that it is not wise to assume that any two dates given in various productions use the same calendar era. Thus the year 1996 mentioned in one episode might be after the year 2018 mentioned in another episode, for example.

And I don't care whether the creators intended for dates to be given using different calendar eras, becaue that is what they ended up depicting in their various productions, intentionally or not. The use of diffferent calendar eras is canon.

Oh yeah JJ Trek but 2009 Star Trek was a good movie despite its obvious JJ quirks.

To quote my brother, "He got the ball rolling, then the ball rolled away from him."

Beyond was clearly made by Ferengi, for Pakleds.

Honestly, ST09 was just meh at best. It was only marginally better than INTO DARKNESS and NEMESIS.

I hated the design of the Enterprise, both internal and external.

BEYOND was really, really good. And it accomplished the impossible... it made me feel bad about the destruction of the Enterprise. The way it was systematically destroyed piece by piece was a pretty gruesome way to destroy a ship. And the characters were all good in it, too.

Truthfully, the only two positive things I can say about 09 is that it reignited interest in the franchise to a new generation of people, and the casting choices of several characters. (Quinto, Urban, and Pegg)

And the less said about the mess that is INTO DARKNESS, the better... NEMESIS is a better movie than that garbage.

I'm not a fan of the TNG films, with the exception of "First Contact". But I still prefer them over Abrams' 2009 and 2013 Trek movies.
To each their own. There is no emotional attachment for me in the TNG films, no investment in the outcome or what the characters are focusing on. Abrams' films have that firm emotional grab and a throughline that I fully engage with.

I want to thank the creators of Picard for giving us a Star Trek Movie in 2023 when a certain other creative team that shall remain nameless can't get their act together and give us their movie in 2023, if ever.
Wait, there's going to be a movie? Where can I find out more?

PIC Season 3 is supposed to be like TNG's Star Trek VI. It's making up for Nemesis, so I'll take it.

Plus (another Controversial Opinion) I like PIC more than TNG, so I'll like what they do here more.
