What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

You're right, there are clearly differences beyond the little bit of gold. Shame she's never gotten even one little decoration. You don't suppose she's a junior lawyer and whoever assigned her as prosecutor hoped she'd lose?

My assumption would be that as a lawyer she just wears her dress uniform whenever she's on duty, kind of like a present-day male lawyer will probably wear a suit all the time. She's not going on any landing parties or climbing up Jefferies tubes.

Since we're talking about the TNG films on the other page I think going for TMP type "serious sci fi" would have been a better route for them since that's what the show so often was, instead of trying to turn Picard into an action hero. An extended version of All Good Things with better special effects could have been a great movie for instance.

Maybe TNG-era Picard might be added to the list, but in a distant third to the other two, to be sure.

Data as well, he and Picard were the face of the franchise for a while a bit like Kirk and Spock. But it's definitely everted to the TOS characters since.

I’ve said it before, TMP is the best TNG movie.

I would add Worf as well — more than once over the years, I’ve heard some random “Worf joke” in a public place, so he’s obviously got some staying power.

Not sure if this is controversial or not, but here goes mine..

TNG should have continued as a TV series another few seasons, possibly moving to UPN as their tentpole series. The TNG cast should have not done movies and Voyager should not have been made. The Trek movies should have remained a unique phenomenon of the TOS cast. After TNG and DS9 ended, Trek should have taken a rest and built demand for something new instead of going right into ENT.

I like Voyager a lot. But it botches its premise spectacularly, 'tis true.

It can’t even get past the pilot before they eliminate any conflict that might have added to it. The second Chakotay and Belanna show up in Starfleet uniforms…game over.

That’s what initially made Seven such a breath of fresh air. She challenged Janeway on her shit. Not everything was hunky dory…until later when she just became another member of the crew.

The TNG films always felt a little flat. Like they were second tier films. Plus, more often than not, they were kinda dull. There was no sense of adventure or excitement.
I know I'm a weird one for saying this, but I prefer Generations and Insurrection over the other two TNG movies. Sure, they were basically episodes in a longer format, but I enjoy them over Sir Pat's unwarranted attempts to turn Picard into an action hero. I also really like that GEN and INS spend their time away from Earth.

Insurrection isy favorite TNG era movie.

I have a deep affection for Voyager just as it was. There are other options for grim, dark, shaking camera nonsense (I’m looking at you BSG).

I like optimistic, positive, we can overcome anything Starfleet.

:techman:

Let’s see, what else…

The TNG movies were decent, except NEM. TOS movies 2-6 were awesome. I love those more than the series.

BEY was the best of the Kelvin movies. 09 was fun but unbelievably stupid. ID was about 40 minutes too long and the whole Khan thing was terrible.

I mean, I love Trek 2009. The first 10 minutes are just exquisite. But yeah, it's dumb. And works in spite of how ridiculous it gets.
