What are you watching???

Catching up on the latest season of Homeland and anxiously awaiting the April 14 release of season 2 of Fortitude. I came across the first season on Amazon and it was probably one of the more intriguing shows I saw last year. Great writing and acting, but it seems like not very many people know about it. It's crazy how many well known actors are in it but it was not heavily marketed in the US.

New Rick and Morty episode they snuck in to Samurai Jack's timeslot on April Fools Day.

So, between the two recent versions of Anne of Green Gables , after having watched a bit of them both, I have to say I much prefer the one with Martin Sheen. Seems to be much closer to the original story, like the more famous Megan Follows version was, meanwhile the other version (CBC/Netflix) seems to take a lot of liberties and takes a much more grim and bleak approach choosing to focus on a lot of the hardships. The Martin Sheen version also has a much better actress playing the part of Anne.

Godzilla Raids Again (1955) (Japanese w/English subtitles, not the English dubbed version)

Sequel to the original Godzilla that was quickly released less then half a year after the first, and it shows. It has some decent Godzilla action for the time, but its hampered by a mediocre script, uninteresting human characters and a very lame ending. It basically ends the cool Godzilla stuff (which I won't spoil) at the end of the second act, making the third act feel very slow and uninteresting, and how Godzilla is finally stopped is not done very well and is very anti-climatic. The good points is that Godzilla gets a decent fight against his first monster adversary, but that's about it. Its not a terrible movie, but its slow, and by the time the third act starts its just mediocre.

Rodan (1956)

I could only get the American dubbed version. It wasn't great, although the dub was only a small problem. Mostly it was the lame human characters and extreme lack of Rodan. The bits we got with the two Rodan's (or is the plural just Rodan?) were done well, but there wasn't enough to compensate for the mediocre human stuff, making this movie just ok.

Mothra
(1961)

A decent monster flick, although we could have used more of Mothra in her moth form and less of the two fairies performing in the villain's show. Still, it had decent human characters, and the Mothra scenes were pretty action packed and entertaining. We even got a decent human villain (who is also one of the only fluent English speaking main characters in the japanese kaiju movies I've seen [not counting the dubbed versions], which was surprising until I looked online and saw the actor was japanese-american).

Godzilla (2014)

This is a pretty good movie, but it had problems. The main human character was bland and I didn't really care if he found his family or not. Bryan Cranstan should have stuck around, he was a lot more interesting. Also, it needed more of the monsters. It was way too happy to "tease" fights but cut it off right when it got interesting. What we saw of the monster fights was really good (when it wasn't a bit too dark), and Godzilla and the MUTO's looked good. But, the movie didn't seem to get that the monster stuff is the real draw of the film, and so we never get a real full fight scene. We get parts of them and they're good, sometimes very good (Godzilla's use of his atomic breath was especially awesome), but even at the end we don't get an uninterrupted fight scene, and that's a big problem.

Still, its a good movie, but hopefully they learn from their mistakes in the sequel(s) they have planned, and write more interesting human characters and actually show us full monster fights without spending the whole movie teasing and never really giving the viewers a big enough pay off to the teases.
