What are you watching???

Watched The Lego Movie, for the first time. I saw it on Comcast's OnDemand list and thought I'd give it a go.

Now I'm going to have that damn song stuck in my head all night.

Pan's Labyrinth

This movie looks really nice (outside of some bad Day-for-night shots), and it has some great looking fantasy elements. But, its also extremely depressing and the non-fantasy stuff is a bit tedious. Not a bad movie, but its the first Guillermo Del Toro movie that I've seen that I'd call mediocre.

Sarah Jane Adventures Season 5 Episode 1

Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode 4

I'm really only mentioning this one because it is the most boring, pointless episode of an anime I've ever seen.

Hulk (2003 Film)

I've tried to watch it before, but this is the first time I've watched all the way through. Its not very good. Way too slow, and the story just isn't very good. It feels more like some drama or art film then a superhero film. It had a few decent moments, like the desert action scene, but overall its not remotely a good movie. I've seen worse, but that's not really a complement.

Ang Lee tried something new. It was a gamble which didn't pay off. Bana was IMO a better Banner than both Ed Norton and Mark Ruffalo (though I honestly liked Norton), and J-Conn and Sam Elliott were good Rosses.

I liked Norton and Ruffalo much better then Bana. Heck, I'd put Bana on a list of worst superhero film protagonists. If we only start with the superhero boom that started with Blade/X-Men, he is the worst. If its all time, he's definitely in the top 10. Connelly was also pretty bad as Betsy Ross. It doesn't help that her part was written horribly, but I was not impressed by her performance at all. She really reminded me of Megan Fox's performance in Transformers, all wooden and barely human. Connelly didn't dress scantily and get filmed in "sexy" poses obviously, and that's like half of Fox's "performance" in most movies, but the acting was very similar. Sam Eilliot was ok, but the writing was terrible and he couldn't save it. I found him fairly annoying, so I'd have to put Hurt over him. Nick Nolte I don't even want to get into, he was just terrible in every aspect.

As for the movie itself, I'd rather have a more standard movie done well then pretentious drivel. Unfortunately, Ang Lee seems like an artsy filmmaker who had to do a superhero movie, and he was not the right person for it. I'm sure he's a decent director for other films, but he doesn't work for mainstream stuff (and no, Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi, etc aren't what I'd call mainstream, even if they're well known).. The terrible script didn't help, but Ang Lee should never have been the director. He can't do action (at least superhero action that the Hulk needs), either in conception or execution (the "final" battle is one of the most embarrassing fights in modern superhero film history). The editing style, in a fake "comic book panel" theme, is hilarious and the only thing that really kept me from falling asleep, but it was also stupid and never should have been done. The characters are all terrible and unlikable, the story is terrible and glacially slow, and its one of the few movies I've seen where the directing was so bad (or at least fit so poorly with the movie) that even I noticed how bad it was. Plus, it was a 2 hours and 18 minutes that felt about 5 years long.

I'd put this movie over stuff like Catwoman, but barely. At least that was over 30 minutes shorter.

From the Ross' on hand, do you have a wishlist for the Red Hulk and red She Hulk?

If they had to use the current actors, then William Hurt and Liv Tyler. They're not only the canon actors in the MCU, they're the better actors in the roles. I don't think either would do very well as Red Hulk/Red She-Hulk, but they'd do better then Elliot/Connelly.

Dark Matter returns here tonight, so that's on the agenda.
I'm just going to finish off Human Target before that.
