What are you watching???

So let me see if I have my facts straight:

1. Chris Rock makes a joke about a crappy movie that Jada Pinkett starred in, because Chris Rock is a comedian who makes jokes.

2. This offended Jada Pinkett, which caused Will Smith to get up, walk over, punch Chris Rock in the face, sit back down, and drop the F-Bomb about Rock making fun of his wife, all on national television where entire families with kids could potentially be watching the show.

3. Smith then wins the award that Rock was preparing for him, and apologizes to the ‘academy’ (but not to Rock) all teary-eyed, while the rest of the audience (or at least the few people whose reactions they showed, like Serena Williams) cries with him and acts like he’s some kind of hero for just punching out another man who made a joke.

Now, if I have my facts straight:

Fuck Will Smith, and fuck his wife too.

No, you don't have your facts straight. Jada Pinkett, who I'm not all that fond of btw, has been in the press lately, discussing that she has alopecia, which she'd been hiding for years with wigs, hats, etc. Because of a medical condition, she is bald and has finally come out in public totally bald--I think within the last month or two. Chris Rock made a joke about her bald head, probably off the cuff, saying she looked like she was starring in GI Jane 2. I don't know if he knew about her medical problems or not. The camera caught her rolling her eyes--she seemed annoyed but not upset. But we don't know if she was upset about it or not. Will Smith WAS upset, acted like a jerk, & stormed up to the podium and slapped him and then swore at him on national television.

What Chris Rock said was rude, but Will Smith acted like a total ass; he committed assault. He's lucky Chris Rock didn't press charges. But there's no evidence his wife asked or instructed him to do anything. I really have lost all respect for him.

The video I saw of the event only had Chris Rock saying ‘Can’t wait for G.I.Jane 2.’ That’s it. He said nothing about her baldness, unless the joke itself was intentionally implying that. He certainly didn’t say that ‘she looked like she was starring in it.’ And Pinkett certainly didn’t stop Smith from getting out of his chair, or tell him to shut up with the F-Bombs.

Was Rock’s joke in bad taste? Possibly, if his intent was to make fun of her baldness. But if it was ok to punch comedians in the face for making jokes in bad taste, every comedian would look like Rocky Balboa.

Yes. The joke itself was intentionally implying it.

He was body shaming her being bald by implying she was starring in a sequel to a film were the lead was a woman with a shaved head.

I’ve never seen G. I. Jane, so I’ll take your word for that. Wasn’t even aware that Pinkett wasn’t in it. So yes, I can see that Rock’s joke was intentional, and in poor taste. But I stick by what I wrote.

I’m not sure how the stunt would boost ratings if people already weren’t watching it. The only way that would work is if people thought that Smith was going to punch Rock ahead of time. Do you think more people will now watch it if they think fisticuffs will break out?

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the whole thing was staged to boost ratings.

Highly doubt it judging from the shocked and later on very confused reaction by Chris Rock and in addition Will Smith dropping F-Bombs immediately after for everybody to hear and see ( well not in the US, but worldwide and on Youtube).

At least Smith apologized to Rock as reported this morning but may still face legal consequences by the Academy. It's interesting to see the two camps develop - the one sticking to Smith and saying it was right and the other condemning it.

After seeing the video from other countries which did not censure it all out, you can see the Will Smith laughed at the joke. Why he came on stage later and slapped Chris Rock, I couldn't say. Maybe it was a uh oh my wife didn't like it I better do something manly.

The thing is Will Smith is very quick witted, he could have thrown a verbal jab right back and Chris Rock, an insult sparing match might have actually helped the show a bit more than the slap. He also could have thrown insults back without cursing.

One person on Twitter asked would it be okay if the husband of a balding man had done the same thing? Or if a white man had hit Chris Rock?

The Academy is reviewing incident to see if Smith should be allowed back next year or for a set number of years. Several Academy members also tried to get together to see if Smith should have been removed from the theater, but they didn't have enough time to talk it through. Nothing like this has ever happened before. The Academy will have to make an example of Will Smith, which will not look good no matter how light the punishment is. Chris Rock is protected because he is a comedian and Will and Jada are public figures, which makes them fair game for jokes; even jokes in poor taste.

I'm glad Smith did apologize to Rock.

It certainly was the reaction of his wife to the joke because initially he seemed to find it funny. In the few seconds between he must have seen that his wife is pissed and something must have snapped very hard in him. He could have confronted Rock backstage, even gotten loud and dropped some F-Bombs on him ( which would have inevitably still led to some huge tabloid material) but he went onstage and slapped him - not cool

As i said before if he felt that strongly to immediately deal with this he still could have caused a scene and walk up to him onstage and tell it to his face to apologize or something like it. Anything but actual physical violence, it might have "just" been a slap and he didn't send him to the floor covered in blood but still violence.

However it is an extremely fine line between a joke and something too personal and people step over that line many times, sometimes without even knowing they have hurt or insulted someone.

Perhaps.

But the main reason I think this was staged was simply...hey, it's Hollywood. EVERYTHING is fake. This is just another example of that.

I agree het should have fight It verbally, now Smith is just pathetic when he hit Rock.

I am happy that my wife can defend herself, she will never accept if i hit someone because a joke or insult

Watching ABC World News Tonight. Seems like I was wrong, Smith was indeed asked to leave the theater, but refused. That is going to go against him, bigly, when the Academy meets to discuss it.
