Just wondering what holidays those of us here are celebrating.

I attempted to get as many holidays in here as I could remember; I know that several are celebrated on the Winter Solstice but I'm afraid I can't think of the names of any of them at the moment. :(

Christmas, but mostly because it's what my family does every year, not because I necessarily want to. Christmas doesn't mean a whole lot to me.

Frankly, I'm far more excited for New Years.

Oh, damn. I left the Gregorian New Year off. I knew I forgot something.

Haha, I suppose "Giftmas" would be the most accurate. I don't celebrate any of the poll options but since my husband and his family celebrate Christmas, we spend it with them. They aren't religious though, and I'm Hindu, and my husband's atheist so it's really more of Giftmas than anything else.

I clicked the Solstice and Other options as winter is my favourite season but the thing I'm actually "celebrating" is the craziness of it all: We bring trees into our homes, 'decorate' with all kinds of ugly tacky things none of us would even look at twice the remainder of the year, we eat (things that aren't good for us) like there's no tomorrow and drink like we've never before experienced a hangover. Shops, streets and entire cities spend fortunes on putting up displays of lights and the same tacky things we put up in our homes -only bigger. We listen to ooold songs -that weren't even good the first time we heard them and watch ancient films and TV specials that rarely are any better than the 'decorations' we use.

All of it just for the crazy fun of it all -I

Christmas.

Try finding any other celebration in New Zealand in December and I will be presently surprised.

Yeah I got that right.

I'm celebrating giftmas even though it's with my family who celebrate christmas. They aren't too religious though and frequintly end dinner in argument... So much for "togetherness".

My family never used to have that problem, but that was before my brother became a born again 9/11 Truther.

Thanksgiving was an ordeal this year. I'm so not looking forward to Christmas.

Well, I love Christmas. A lot. I like to think I don't intrude my holiday into non-celebrants' lives, but to be absolutely honest, I expect I'm annoyingly perky about it, really. Other people talk about how they hate this part or that part, and I have to admit that I love just about the entire glittery, shiny, birth-of-Jesus, Santa-Claus-is-comin'-to-town, Christmas-carols-playing, gift wrapping, present giving, present receiving thing.

About the only thing I don't like - besides trying to find something for my MIL, something that she'll like but won't think is too expensive or too fancy-schmancy - is shipping presents to those family members who live far away. All the rest of it is great.

See? Annoyingly perky, huh?

Christmas, Solstice and Other. :D
I'm not averse to having a good time, anytime.

Christmas. I love it. I'm already looking forward to midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, and I hope I'll be able to hear some proper carols before that (not always easy to find here).

I agree with you on the carols, Mark - my solution is to amass a collection of Christmas CDs that's getting to be almost embarassingly big and will continue to get bigger.

I really don't need any more versions of "The 12 Days of Christmas," though. Nuthin' wrong with it, per se, but why do so many people insist on including that song on their collections?
