Its quite easy to understand.
We live in a socio-economic system that's based around competition and acquisition of material wealth - neither of which are necessary for a functioning society (least of all extremely fast technical and scientific advancement), and as a result this creates a severe warping of values... producing a systems value disorder if you will where people develop a fetish for seeing others fail.
Its basically nothing more than learned behavior. Competition isn't ingrained in us... neither is greed, etc... we simply pick these patterns of behavior from the environment we live in (which from a social point of view is excessively primitive).
I was genuinely disappointed with lack of any serious advancement in Trek from proceeding centuries after what we already saw in late 24th to the point where I basically felt sorry for how low the bar has dropped on Trek (almost to the point where its a short hair away from being Star Wars).
Its genuinely not something to applaud or even EXPECT.
Its something one should be concerned about (mind you, this is hardly 'earth shattering' as real life is eminently more important and arguably more interesting too - I'm just saying that from the context of Trek and what is was supposed to represent... I'm just disappointed the writers hadn't pushed the bar nearly enough).

The thing about the mystery in the nebula is how it will, without fail, impact Michael Burnham above all others. It will have to be a pretty substantial ghost from her past.

1. Prime Georgiou (I know she is supposed to be dead)
2. Prime Lorca and the Buran
3. Prime Lorca on another ship
4. Calypso Discovery
5. Another version of Book
6. Ash Tyler
If it’s something that is directly connected to Burnham then it could be any of them. If it’s “something from her past” I’m not sure Calypso works.

Sadly, I believe you are correct. This whole show is just about her. It might as well be called Star Trek: Michael Burnham. Whatever the mystery of the Burn is, you can be sure it has something to do with her personally.
It'll probably end up being Michael's father in there.
After all, we never learned conclusively that her father was killed by the Klingons... she thought they killed her mother too (and look at how that turned out).
This. They sure ain’t doing any Discovering, it’s all about how big a chunk of the universe Burnham will save every week.
