Well I ordered a ton of stuff from amazon.com today. I got three movies for my mom: The Collector (DVD), Imitation of Life (DVD) and The Rains Came (VHS). I also got Equilibrium, The Thirteenth Floor, Dark City and 24 Season 1 for myself. I got 24 for $14.99. :D The rest of the movies were really cheap. And my g/f also ordered Mash S1. So yeah, it's gonna take a while for the stuff to get here, but once it does, it's gonna be a BIG package. :D

Oh yeah, me and my g/f watched Gattaca the other day. I loved even more this time through. Maybe cos I understood it even better, or whatever. But yeah, I absolutely loved it. Probably my favourite sci-fi film of the last decade. My g/f liked it too, but she thought it was to sad, lol. :)

*trades copy of Last Samurai for scotch on the rocks*

Vash hasn't been in, right?

*looks over shoulder, nervously*

So who's watching the Farscape mini tomorrow? I most likely won't get to see part 1 until monday due to...certain reasons. :) I watched "Bad Timing" earlier today and I absolutely loved it. It totally kicked ass. :D

I totally forgot that was gonna be on. Hmm.

I might watch it. I'm not sure. Mainly because, though I'm sure it'll be interesting, I have no burning desire or interest to tune in ... Farscape was always, to me, a little too "out there," a little too unstable. One of those shows that I like ... but in a secondary, casual fashion, not in a primary, fanatical way.

I guess I like a more traditional storytelling style, like Trek does, but I totally lost it with Farscape's 4th Season ... I just got jarred and confused, and slipped away from it. I always found it intriguing. But it got more frustrating as it went on. And then it got canned, and I never saw the final eight episodes or so. Season 3, I think, was the best. It had a good mixture of sanity and insanity, but ...

I might tune in for the Farscape mini-series, though. But I'm not sure.

[whinge]

Farscape was made here, but that doesn't mean we actually get to see it. :(

[/whinge]

So I want lots of spoilers - I have to live vicariously through you people until that far-off day I actually get to see it for myself.

*** fills a heap of orders ***

And I want NO SPOILERS WHATEVER, so would you people who see it before I do (I'm in the UK) mind using the lovely spoiler tags we've been so generously provided with, pretty please?

SB - Kanar over here, please, and not the one the Vorta's drinking...

Oh my god, I just got finished watching the Peacekeeper Wars!

Scorpius is Crichton's father! And they get married at the end!

Oh hi, BlackDog!

Well, I'm looking forward to the Farscape mini for sure! It's been a LONG time since the series ended on such *ghasty* cliffhanger, and I can't wait to see the ending at last. :)

However, I won't get to watch it for several days. coaster and I are Tivoing it because he is flying at the moment....and I've agreed to not watch it until he gets back.

So it could be *days* before I see it.

Therefore...you guys be sure and use the spoiler tags, or standard warnings, or somethin'. :p

how are you, Sean my dear?
I'm doing pretty high fly falootin' well, thank you! What about yourself?

And no one needs to worry about me spoiling the Farscape mini-series since I... kind of dislike Farscape. I don't know why, it just never engaged me. I'm excited for everyone looking forward to the special though.

By the way, and this is for everyone. A quick question - what do you think are the most important elements to science fiction? I'm writing an essay, and chose to write it on the components of science fiction. I'm looking at mainly film and television (As that's the program I'm in!) I intend to reference Deep Space Nine in one of my examples, in particular In the Pale Moonlight and the weighty morale decision faced by Captain Sisko. My main argument in that paragraph is, you can set a story in as fantastic an alien enviroment as you want (Deep Space Nine) but if the characters don't have real, relatable struggles to endure, it's not worth watching.

What about you all? What does science fiction mean to you?

Honestly, I'd suggest we don't post any spoilers about the mini in here. It would probably be a good idea if we had the discussion about it in one of the threads in SF&F. :)

Well the characters are definately the most important aspect. Look at DS9 compared to Voyager or Enterprise for instance. Episodes that have a fairly sub-par story still often work on DS9, because the characters are so great. OTOH, a similar story (quality-wise) might make a dreadful ep on a different show, just because the characters aren't all that interesting.

The other thing that makes really good sci-fi of course is the plot itself. No matter how great the characters on DS9 are, one of the reasons the show is so amazing is the great stories that it tells.

But yeah, it's really a combination of both. And of course, it often needs a bit of discovering some truths about humanity (In the Pale Moonlight, The Siege or AF-558, Far Beyond the Stars).

Agreed. Someone's bound to start a running commentary thread in SFF and I'll have a couple hundred posts to sort through after it's over! :) Or maybe everyone will be so enraptured with the miniseries that they'll all wait a while before discussing it.

Lol, most definately. :)

I bet everyone is going to be talking about it, no matter how amazing it will be (which I'm sure it will). :D

Oh yeah, this is my 7000th post. :D
