Wearing a Star Trek uni vs. sports jersey

Wearing a trek uniform the same as a wearing sports jersey?

OK I've seen this brought up too many times. I make this poll so I can identify the crazies.

Are you one of those that thinks wearing a Star Trek uniform in public and making people call you Lt. Commander Bob is the same thing as wearing a sports jersey or apparel in public?

Wearing a trek uniform would be equal to wearing a full football uniform(helmet and all).

Now, wearing a trek shirt that looked very similar to a uniform top along with more standard clothes could be pretty cool.

I actually agree with most of that. Wearing a Trek T-shirt and a football team T-shirt, there really is no difference.

AND I kind of think jersey's can be tacky and a little over the top in certain atmospheres.

But in NO CIRCUMSTANCE do I feel wearing a sports jersey in public is the same as wearing a star trek uniform in public. There are major differences between the two.

But I know there are posters here that feel differently, so far they are too intimidated by awesome thread to defend their strange dress habits.

wearing sports jerseys makes you look stupid
wearing trek costumes makes you look stupid

The only time I ever wear my sports Jersey is when I'm going to a game. I've never worn a Trek uniform but if I were to do so it would only be at a convention or something similar.

Both are somewhat silly on anyone who is:

1) Not in Starfleet.
2) Not a pro-athelete
3) Over the age of 12

I kind of agree. But, if you are walking downtown in your city or town, and you see someone wearing a sports jersey and another person wearing a starfleet uniform... which is more silly?

Clearly the starfleet uni.

To have it be a fair comparison, it would have to be a full starfleet uniform, with phaser and tricorder - against - a full sports team uniform, say a football uniform, with pads, cleats, and actually wearing a helmet.

Which would less silly walking about in public ... starfleet uniform.

:)

Sports jersey in public - grow up
Starfleet shirt in public - grow up
Full Starfleet uniform in public - funny but sad
Full sports uniform in public - sad but sad

I don't know, I'm biased by the fact I think all sports are silly, but wearing Trek stuff in public seems silly too.

I voted that they're different.

I do, however, have a preference. My friend John Broughton just gave me an absolutely authentic Captain Kirk (TOS, third season) tunic. :)

And John's a whiz on the sewing machine based on his work on "Starship Farragut" and on the costume boards.

People wear sports jerseys because they support a real team. They are usually worn at a game, where its not certain who will win, and where part of the fun is, apparently, to cheer on your team. As far as I know its also a minor way of supporting your team financially.

Star Trek is fictional, and everyone knows the federation is going to win. Wearing a Star Trek uniform is way weirder than wearing a sports jersey. I guess it could be kind of fun at a convention, but I dont see any purpose to wearing one outside of that setting.

Its not like you're 'supporting' the Romulan empire.

People don't wear sports jerseys to support a team, they wear one to identify with the team. That's why all the team jerseys have a player's name on it. (I've often fantasized of going ballistic when I see someone wearing one: "OMG, it's Albert Pujols, right here in my 7-11! You're shorter and fatter than I imagined.")

So, I see nothing wrong with wearing a T-shirt that shows my identification with Star Trek. The question is one of degree: a jersey or a Star Trek T-shirt: OK. A full Starfleet uniform (or full sports uniform): over the top and not OK.

To clarify, this should really be about wearing a sports jersey in public (like hockey or football or whatever) vs. someone wearing a star trek uniform in public.

I think everyone is cool with Star Trek T-shirts. It's unrealistic to think you'll ever see someone walking down the street with football pads/helmet/etc.

But people DO walk around with jerseys on and people actually DO walk around in Starfleet uniforms. And if you can't tell the difference between a TV show and sports and think wearing a jersey or startrek uniform is equivalent then please vote! I want to know who is crazies around here.

Well, whenever I attend a major sporting event, I wear nothing but a cleverly positioned tricorder. A TOS tricorder, mind you. The spinoff tricorders are much too small.

I think the first sign you might be in trouble is when you're referring to it in real-life as a Starfleet uniform rather than a Star Trek costume...
