Wearing a Star Trek uni vs. sports jersey

Wearing a trek uniform the same as a wearing sports jersey?

People don't wear sports jerseys to support a team, they wear one to identify with the team. That's why all the team jerseys have a player's name on it. (I've often fantasized of going ballistic when I see someone wearing one: "OMG, it's Albert Pujols, right here in my 7-11! You're shorter and fatter than I imagined.")

People I know who support teams wear their football shirts either when they're having a kick about, or when they go to games, Im pretty sure some of it is to do with supporting a team. Also, those shirts look pretty comfortable, I could go out on a hot day with a sports shirt on a it would feel pretty good. As for shorter and fatter, most people I see in star trek uniforms are scrawny with glasses, not exactly Captain Kirk.

The question is one of degree: a jersey or a Star Trek T-shirt: OK. A full Starfleet uniform (or full sports uniform): over the top and not OK.

Well, the poll is specifically about a uniform vs a jersey.

OK I've seen this brought up too many times. I make this poll so I can identify the crazies.

Are you one of those that thinks wearing a Star Trek uniform in public and making people call you Lt. Commander Bob is the same thing as wearing a sports jersey or apparel in public?

While I would have a problem wearing a Star Trek uniform (at least the top) in public I wouldn't make people call me by any rank.

Neither of your choices accurately reflects my opinion, so no vote for you. :p

Then I will just have to assume you are one of the crazies! :vulcan:

I say if you are going to wear the uniform in public, go out and make people call you by rank! You have earned it!

Classification error...requesting further instructions....

Seriously? You lost your "argument" so you start a thread that's completely biased and misleading, just to prove you have no point?

lol, what? please show me this argument I lost.

I started the thread because I wanted to see how many people (on this forum) actually think wearing a star trek costume is the same thing as wearing a jersey.

I'm not into sports at all, but I did rather covet the baseball uniform shirt I once saw at the "Cheers" bar in Boston. I settled on a T-shirt with the bar sketch from the opening credits depicted on it but next time I go back, it'll be the baseball shirt with the embroidered "Cheers" logo.

I've also admired replica DS9 baseball shirts and caps from "Take Me Out to the Holosuite".

Starfleet uniforms in public? Sure! Traveling to a SF Media event via public transport, even on a plane once. But not for regular day wear. I do have a great assortment of bizarre and fun ST T-shirts, and a great one recently bought from the new range at Roddenberry.com - the green version actually has the command logo sideways above one hip, just like Kirk's casual uniform top. Hilarious!

I did buy a pair of soccer shorts online I'm going to wear around the house. I don't know if I would wear they out in public. They are bright white with Ireland's national soccer logo. I got a friend I use to work with wore nothing but New York sports teams jerseys, t-shirts, jackets, and coat. I always thought it was kind of childish. The guy wore nothing else on his days off. I think I remember back in the 1990s in my school kids were wearing basketball jerseys over a t-shirt or long sleave shirt.

People wear sports jerseys because they support a real team. They are usually worn at a game, where its not certain who will win, and where part of the fun is, apparently, to cheer on your team. As far as I know its also a minor way of supporting your team financially.

Star Trek is fictional, and everyone knows the federation is going to win. Wearing a Star Trek uniform is way weirder than wearing a sports jersey. I guess it could be kind of fun at a convention, but I dont see any purpose to wearing one outside of that setting.

Its not like you're 'supporting' the Romulan empire.

Couldn't have said it better. At a convention--like when you're actually AT a sports game and acting silly is expected--there's nothing wrong with it. Outside...it looks stupid. But Trek looks worse to passers-by because it looks like you can't tell the difference between fact and fantasy.

Such as the fans who somehow believe they are part of the team, and anything they can do will somehow affect the outcome of the game?

Usually fans who wear a jersey don't wear the complete rest of the uniform along with it. So it's not like they're in disguise as a player on the team. If you see somebody who's otherwise in streetclothes but they have a jersey, that's no different than a simple T-shirt or sweater with your favorite team logo on it. A jersey is just another kind of shirt, after all. Same goes for a T-shirt with a Trek theme. It's just a shirt.

A complete uniform, OTOH...that's another story.

Same thing. :p

That's why all the team jerseys have a player's name on it.

Not all...

Yeah you get a pass if you are at or going to a convention.

People who wear Trek gear out and about don't need a "pass" from you or anyone else to do so. It is quite possible to reach a point in your life where you dress for your own enjoyment and not for the approval of anyone else when it's your own time.

Wikipedia: 'In team sports, the term home advantage (also called home field/court/diamond/ice advantage) describes the advantage–usually a psychological advantage–that the home team is said to have over the visting team as a result of playing in familiar facilities and in front of supportive fans.'

Lets gather 20000 people in starfleet uniforms and watch 'The Wrath of Khan'. If Spock doesnt die, then I will agree with you.

QFT.

I think it's about the same. I wouldn't wear sports/Starfleet attire at church, in court, or to the job (we have a dress code... sigh), but on my own time whether in public or around the house, I pick which shirt to wear!

Oh but you do. And because of your attitude you don't get one! :angryrazz:

I always new this message board was about 36% crazies. Thanks to those that honestly identified themselves.

As others have pointed out there is a big difference between wearing a jersey and a full Starfleet uniform. The uniform is a costume, it all about pretending to be something your not. The jersey on the other hand is just like any other shirt with a noticeable brand logo/name on it, and is about brand association (which I guess would also have some element of pretense about it in some cases).

However, if this was a question of there was a difference between a Trek shirt or footy shirt, the re would be no real difference between wearing them. It would just be fan support/brand association.

I kind of agree. But, if you are walking downtown in your city or town, and you see someone wearing a sports jersey and another person wearing a starfleet uniform... which is more silly?

Clearly the starfleet uni.
To have it be a fair comparison, it would have to be a full starfleet uniform, with phaser and tricorder - against - a full sports team uniform, say a football uniform, with pads, cleats, and actually wearing a helmet.

Which would less silly walking about in public ... starfleet uniform.

:)

Or go the other way and dress in the "uniform" of an Olympic diver or swimmer.

I doubt it would be easier to get a table at a restaurant in that sport uniform compared to a Starfleet costume.

Sports have been around a lot longer than Trek and widely accepted in public. Wearing a sports jersey expressing fan support is widely accepted, not only at a game but as casual wear as well.

Wearing a Trek shirt or even whole Trek uniform in public (as opposed to at a convention) is not perceived the same way, and largely due to how fans have been caricatured in the media. As such wearing a Trek costume is considered juvenile minded. It isn't fair, it shouldn't be that way, but it is. It's become a matter of perception.

That said I have noticed that Trek symbols have gained wider acceptance. I've seen lots of folks wearing Starfleet or Trek related pins on their shirts or jackets. I've seen Trek related baseball caps as well as T-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets. That's deemed perfectly acceptable in public along with other representations/expressions of pop culture. But an actual trek uniform just comes across as weird. I'm a Star Trek fan and even I think it would be a little weird.

Id say the way fans have been caricatured in the media is largely due to many wearing uniforms in real life, not the other way around. Wearing a trek costume is kind of juvenile; youre dressing up like one of your heros for fun!
