We see people stacked like wood frequently

10 people killed in SUV rollover near Tucson

SONOITA, Ariz. (AP) — Ten illegal immigrants "stacked like wood" in the back of a sports utility vehicle crammed with at least 27 people were killed when the driver lost control and rolled over on a remote southern Arizona highway, authorities said Sunday.

The Ford Excursion had no rear seat and most of the men and women were ejected when the SUV crashed just before midnight Saturday near Sonoita, about 40 miles southeast of Tucson. Authorities said all the victims are believed to be illegal immigrants from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Equador and perhaps Mexico.

Arizona Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Joy Craig told The Associated Press that the remote area where the crash happened is a route commonly used by those smuggling illegal immigrants into the U.S.
"We see the people stacked like wood frequently," she said. "If they had had the right number of people in there and they all had their seat belts on, they would have lived."

Or, had they either applied to enter the United States legally or stayed home they would not have been "stacked like wood".

I'm all for legal immigration. However, we need to build a wall to stop this stuff, for our protection and theirs.

Not to take away from the tragedy, but isn't this skirting the kind of political/hot-button topics that we're not supposed to have in Misc?

Definitely sounds like a political thread to me. Even worse, using a tragedy as a springboard to advance a political agenda. I guess TLS can't do this crap in TNZ anymore, so he foists it upon the decent denizens of Misc.?

Interesting! I guess that makes Misc. kind of like the old "Think Tank," then. Only with personal threads, too.

Back to the OP, it seems a little insensitive to finger-point at people when they're dead now.

This seems like a place for more civil discussion. I'll state my view civilly and hopefully you'll do a good job of it when you stop focusing on the messenger.

My opinion is that this is a terrible, terrible tragedy. At least we share that view. However, these poor people would still be alive in their homes if they hadn't decided to break our laws. At least it appears none of our people were involved in this accident. This time.

And while it may be insensitive to point out the error of their ways, it will hopefully prevent similar deaths like this in the future.

Oh, that's great. :techman: Locutus was an outspoken critic of the ban before he got power, so I guess it's not surprising.

As for the topic, I'm unpersuaded that a wall would help stop this kind of thing. These people are driven to do this by desperation; while a physical barrier would cut down on the total number of people who sneak through, it seems like those who do would have to--and be willing to--take greater risks to get past. They'd probably hurt themselves more.

It's terrible that these people died. That being said, a wall would do nothing to stop them. It would be a complete waste of money.

You ooze Christian sympathy with every post. Exodus 22:21

"Do not mistreat an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in Egypt."

Ah...

We've decided to lift the moratorium on political and hot-button/controversial topics in Miscellaneous. However, there are some stipulations.

To borrow a phrase from RJ, focus on "ideas, not ideology," and discussion of individual policies rather than your negative impression of a political party or group as a whole.

And TLS said...

Seems to me like he's stating a policy preference.

What's the big whoop?

To further mean, of course, they'd still be alive.

Well, seems to me some people want a better life in a new land.

Seems to me, throughout history, people have taken upon huge personal risk, including life, to find a better home in a new land.

I wonder where exactly the human race would be today if no one ever risked danger to find a better life in a new land.

I suppose after the climate changed, we would have gone extinct in the African desert rather than migrating to where the food was.

Guess we were pretty lucky no one had built a wall around Europe and Asia.

Who is being mistreated or oppressed? How is building a wall mistreating anyone? It's law enforcement. And we give more foreign aid than any country on Earth.

If you want to live here do it right. I'll even drop off an apple pie when they move into my neighborhood. And I wasn't trying to turn this into a religious subject but since you mentioned it, the Bible also says we must obey the laws of our land as they have been established by God.

And we give more foreign aid than any country on Earth.

In pure dollars only. Per capita, we're like 18th.

That's like two behind Malta.

When a poor man donates $10 and then the billionaire donates $20, yes, he gave more, but I don't exactly think he should be bragging about it.

Indeed. I am reminded of Mark 12:41-44

And Jesus sitting over against the treasury, beheld how the people cast money into the treasury, and many that were rich cast in much.

And there came a certain poor widow, and she cast in two mites, which make a farthing.

And calling his disciples together, he saith to them: Amen I say to you, this poor widow hath cast in more than all they who have cast into the treasury.

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want cast in all she had, even her whole living.

Aren't you the guy who supports immigration raids? Roundups? Having INS tear families apart by deporting people? What would you call arresting someone at work, putting them in a jail cell, and then deporting them while their wife and child still remains in the U.S.? Is that "God's work?" It's certainly not hospitality.
