We could've had the First Asian Female Captain, but no....

What made it monumental wasn't just the diverse casting itself but rather the implication that later in the future a black lady will be working alongside with white men in the most important section of the ship.

I agree! Plumbers can't help it that that tv has created a negative sterotype about them and how anytime they come over to fix a sink and bend over their ass crack is showing.

Jason

Perhaps they feel somewhat compensated by the fact that they're stereotyped as the Big Damn Studs of the porn industry. ;)

Far as I can tell, quite a few of these dudes moonlight as delivery guys.

I thought plumbers got paid pretty good. Must not be the money.

As a big GitS fan, I've watched the original movie that was made in the 90's, the 2x TV series, the newer Movie, and read all the original Manga that it was based on.

And boy was I pissed that they couldn't find a SINGLE Asian person to play Motoko Kusanagi.
If it's a bust issue, there are some Busty Asian Actresses out there; if not, padding.
There are also plenty of good Asian Actresses.
What would've been perfect was a ALL Japanese cast, made by Japan, for Japan; And we get some subtitles.

Kind of like how the Rurouni Kenshin movies were made.
God, that was such a good trilogy of movies.
They didn't look.
No, they just wanted a big name, thus hiring a blond woman of nordic descent to play a Japanese character didn't strike them as problematic at all.
To be fair, Takeshi Kitano was a pretty awesome choice to play Aramaki.

To be equally fair: considering the Major's body is a full prosthetic, she doesn't actually NEED to be Asian. Androids can look like just about anything, right?

I'm still waiting for the inevitable hate-filled backlash for "Battle Angel Alita"

An android can look like anyone or anything, so let’s just hire another white woman. It’s funny how minority roles always get filled by white people when the justification of “race not mattering” is used.

As for the orginal movie it is somewhat sexist simply because your most prominent female character is relegated to just being a love interest for the most part.
I disagree. Telling a story that's primarily about male characters isn't sexist. Just as telling a story that's primarily about female characters isnt sexist.

It really depends on what the story is about. But a story with a mostly male or female cast isn't necessarily sexist.

Casting gender is sort of arbitrary at this point unless the gender is relevant to the story/character. The character of Ripley in ALIEN was originally written as male, but Sigourney Weaver got the role and it worked because nothing about the role itself demanded that a man play the part. That's how casting should work as that can be accessible to non-white males.

As for GHOSTBUSTERS '16, that had a very talented cast and crew behind it, but I think the fact that it was a prolific remake of a classic factored in and resulted in the makers trying way too hard to make it work. These people made some genuinely hilarious films in the past like BRIDESMAIDS, but so much about GHOSTBUSTERS felt off. I wouldn't even say that having a female cast was the least of its problems because it wasn't a problem, it was everything else surrounding that. Though the studio attempting to brand criticisms as "sexist" with hashtags like "ghostbros" was pretty cheap.

Ghostbusters 2016's biggest problem is the direction. It's mostly line-o-rama, where the cast just ad libs a scene and it just keeps going. The problem is that it doesn't cut away and keeps going after it stopped being funny. The movie sometimes wants to build tension, but they have to ad lib jokes in and it gets ruined. It's fine in some scenes, like Kevin's interview. But it ruins other scenes.

Everybody knows it's the poolboys. Those nets are long and get wet for reasons, you know.

Might be because they remade lots of foreign properties and rewrote the characters as American in the same way other foreign countries have remade American movies and cast all asian actors. The problem is not casting a white woman, it's lack of diversity in casting in America as a whole.

I read that as well. I've been reading the Trek book "The Fifty-Year Mission The First 25 Years." Adds more credence to the idea that Majel Barrett wasn't allowed to be the first officer because Roddenberry was having affair instead of because the audience wouldn't accept a woman first officer. I mean we know Trek was created in the 60's but it was also the late 60's I think women's lib had started by then or am I a few years off? At the very least Mary Tyler Moore on "The DIck Van Dyke" show was on tv and lets not forget Trek was made possible in part because of Lucille Ball. I would imagine she would be okay with a strong female character on the show.

Jason

I liked the character but not to pile on the deceased, but she was a bad actress/actor. The Nurse Chapel scenes were bad IMO and her as Troi's Mother ugh......
