WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

That's terrible. Regardless of my thoughts about his movies, nothing like this should happen to anyone. My thoughts are with him and his family.

It's terrible that it happened but it's good he can take the time off to be with his family. I imagine many who have to deal with such a tragedy don't have the luxury. When I suffered through depression, especially when I was younger, I always figured that well-off and successful people didn't have to deal with it.

A Snyder/Whedon collaboration is kind of a wild idea, it will be interesting to see how it turns out. They both have their share of contention amongst fans, For better or worse, I imagine there will be many discussions and debates over who did what and how well it works.

The movie is basically in the can. Whedon will probably just put the finishing touches.

It's like Spielberg taking over for Stanley Kubrick in "Eyes Wide Shut".

I initially didn't believe this when I saw it on ScreenRant, but links to reporting by The Hollywood Reporter corroborating it quickly dispelled my skepticism, and my condolences go out to the Snyder family.

With regards to what Whedon will be tasked with, he'll be dealing with previously-planned additional shooting (of scenes he himself was asked to write) and finishing the film's edting process ad the finalization of all remaining VFX shots for the film, which is actually a very involved process.

That's horrible news. I know Zack and his wife Deborah are a team when it comes to film making, so post-production must have been a terrible strain on them. My deepest sympathies.

The editing part may be the most important. I feel both BvS and Suicide Squad were hurt by very poor editing. And films can be changed a lot in the editing process -- a good film can be ruined by a bad edit, and a flawed film can be salvaged by a good edit. So having Whedon overseeing that part of the process is an encouraging sign -- though of course the circumstances that led to it are shocking and tragic.

What?

Really sad to hear about Snyder's daughter.

Agreed. From stories it sounds like the movie was already being heavily reworked anyway, so they were probably needing a really strong editor to come in and make all the pieces fit together and flow well. And Whedon is one of the best at that there is, who's already proven he knows how to make these movies well (as even the lackluster Age of Ultron still worked a helluva lot better than the clunky, jumbled mess that was Suicide Squad or the theatrical cut of BvS, in my opinion).

And at this point I doubt he'd be able to impose his style that strongly and turn it into a "Joss Whedon movie" even if he wanted to.

I gather it was no more than the kind of reshoots that are done routinely on movies of this scale and budget -- and that fandom always overreacts to. The earlier films went through the same kind of reshoots (I remember the splash the news of the Suicide Squad reshoots made in fandom, most of it unwarranted), but it didn't prevent them from getting dreadful editing jobs.

According to the reports, Whedon was originally brought on in the capacity of a script doctor -- a service he performed on many films early in his career. He was brought on to write some new scenes that the rough edit revealed a need for, but Snyder was going to direct the reshoots and oversee the final edit until he chose to step back to be with his family. So Whedon wasn't brought in for the sake of the directing or editing -- he was brought in to write, and the rest happened out of necessity.

And at this point I doubt he'd be able to impose his style that strongly and turn it into a "Joss Whedon movie" even if he wanted to.

Not in the obvious ways, but as I said, the editing can transform a movie. There's a saying attributed to Peter Bogdanovich: "There are three movies. There's the movie you write, the movie you shoot, and the movie you cut." Whedon being in charge of that final phase might mean it gets edited in a way that emphasizes the moments that develop character and relationships rather than playing up the action and spectacle. Or in a way that makes the logic of the story progression clearer, or just paces it better.

So . . . in regard to the latest news about Snyder, the editing for "Justice League" and other DCEU films is the only thing people can discuss.

I don't know his daughter and only know him through his works. What are we supposed to discuss? Try to find me one article about this incident that doesn't mention Justice League.

I swear every, time reshoots occur for a film, the naysayers pop up with the same doom and gloom predictions.

This is not a joke. I have to admit that I would find this ridiculously funny if the circumstances weren't so tragic.
Poor Zack! He was my neighbor growing up! My condolences to him and his family.
