Way of the Warrior..

Wow...

I just watched his episode on my big 80inch DLP projector screen.. I like the episode cause it acts almost as a second pilot. Plus with Worf's arrival, and Sisko finally growing some "balls", this episode really really is good..

I know that some hated this move away from Bajoran centric stories, but I liked it. And I think, in the end, the show was better for bringing Worf on...

But it also made me feel old when I realized this episode is...gulp...14 years old!!! Yikes...

I really wish I could remember this episode when it first aired, but like much of the middle part of the series, I couldn't. It was awesome on DVD on the 64 inch screen. I agree, it did kind of serve as a second pilot, but just the fact that it was just a 2 hour movie was awesome enough.

I always enjoyed WOTW. Can't believe it premiered 14 years ago! Frankly, I much prefer the Dominion-centric eps -- the Bajoran-centric ones I generally found to be much less compelling. The wormhole and the Gamma Quadrant were the way to go with the series. Let's face it -- the Dominion is one of the most compelling adversaries in ST. They were basically the anti-Federation. -- RR

IMO more people hate the Bajoran stories than like them, and rightly so.:techman:

I'm indifferent about Worf on DS9. I don't feel he added or took away much from the show, other than segwaying in Martok and some good Klingon episodes. Amping up the wars and serialization certainly made the show better. But that started before WOTW.

I think Worf, and that episode specifically, brought some 'action' and some much needed 'alpha male' balls to the show...some of those early episodes were snoozers because Sisko was trying to be the 'black Picard' and it retarded the show's evolution...

Towards the end of the third season they seemed to be going in this direction...but once he goes bald, stands up to Martok and Gowron, and Worf arrives...the show really started clicking..IMO..

I really loved the throwbacks to the pilot, especially how the Klingons thought they were the victims of the same trick O'Brien used in the pilot to convince Dukat that DS9 was fully armed. Only this time, it really was!

These parts in particular:
Benjamin Sisko: We have had a year to prepare this station for a dominion attack, and we are more than ready. If you do not believe me feel free to scan this station.[Both Martok and Gowron look to across the bridge to their sensor officer, who confirms it with a nod.]Martok: It is a illusion created by duranium shadows and thoron fields.Benjamin Sisko: It is no illusion.
and

Gowron: Your shields are down, your station boarded, and more Klingon ships are on their way! Surrender while you can!Benjamin Sisko: I don't think so. My shields are holding, your boarding parties are contained, and my reinforcements are closer than yours.

I watched the episode last weekend and was surprised by how well it holds up...Actually, I watched several episodes over the past week and the series itself is holding up very well.

It's the episode that got me into the show, I was too young to appreciate DS9 when it first started airing, and didn't check back with the show until Worf joined.

For my money, Way of the Warrior is a better 2 hours of Trek than any of the four TNG movies. It just feels "big" and epic.

You can say the same for all of DS9's good 2-parters: Warrior, Purgatory / Inferno, Improbable Cause / Die is Cast, Favor the Bold / Sacrifice of Angels, What You Leave Behind, etc.

I was 14 when WotW premiered. This ep. really ignited my obsession with DS9.

Same. I was 14 when WOTW came out, too. I was obsessed with everything Trek at that point. I was pumped for FC's release later that year, and WOTW was the ep that really got me excited about DS9.

I think that season 4 is when DS9 really started cooking with gas. After that, it never looked back. Seasons 4-7 were great.

Man, the mid-nineties was a good time to be a new Trekker. Not so much nowadays :(

In my area, they used to play DS9 at 12:35am... so I used to have to "go to bed" and pretend to be asleep until I heard my parents turn in for the night. Since I didn't have a TV in my room in those days I'd have to sneak back downstairs and watch DS9 really close to the TV with the volume turned down low.

Somehow, watching DS9 on DVD in the middle of the day with no fear of being caught just isn't quite the same.

God, that brings back a lot of memories! :)

Sisko had "balls" way before this.

But they grew ALOT bigger.

Personally I think Sisko showed way bigger balls in the pilot in facing the "reality" of his existence when he was in the wormhole. I think that coming to terms with something like that and then been able to do something about it is a far more courageous act.

Plus in WotW he was in a large very well armed and equipped space station with reinforcements not far away.

I agree. I'd even go so far as to say most of TNG's two parters were better "films" than the official 4.
