Who says we need it though? Supernatural for instance, I thought was a great show early on. But they lost the ability to raise the stakes without being melodramatic and angsty. Like Ackels brought the writers with him from his soap days. That show is unwatchable now for me, but after 10 seasons, I need to see it to the end.
Arrow season 1 for me was awesome. Fast forward to season 3, and it looks like the show is devolving in to pure angst.
You can have drama, and high stakes without your protagonists being emotional retards. I just completely become detached from the story when I see that. Typically when one goes through trying circumstances, they grow and become the wiser for it after a period of mourning or adjustment. They carry those experiences with them because they taught them lessons, but they don't wear them on their sleeve like a teenager unless they are manic or bi-polar. I don't expect these people to pile on baggage like a mule. That's not interesting tv to me.
