Watchmojo says Star Trek has The Number 1 Fandom

...there was a serious post mortem done on the financial performance of Star Trek Into Darkness. Expectations were not met.

I keep hearing this but I don't think there's any truth to it. If the film struggled that badly, why would Paramount give $170 million to a first time director for a sequel?

Not struggled. Just didn't do as well as expected.

TBH, I'm surprised it did that well. :rommie:

It's the only Trek film I've only ever watched once.

I think it's fair to say that Star Trek has the most divided fandom.
Shut up.

The original divided fandom is the only good one. :p

I suspect the title gets most of the blame

Star Trek finds itself in an interesting position.

There are enough fans to make a successful TV show or movie, but only if all of us watch at the same time -- TNG or TMP.

Could Trek be as big as it was today as a TV show with all the competition out there? Enterprise would be dead after ep 5 and so would VOY and TNG. Even if it's very well written and acted it's a gamble and i understand why they are hesitant about a Live Action tv show.

It would have failed. There wasn't enough angst and introspective music montages for TNG to succeed in today's market. It would have also required a convoluted series arc, that had a major impact on the narrative of every episode.

Angst, not sure we need that much at the beginning but audiences would expect more later. We got some even in TNG.

Who says we need it though? Supernatural for instance, I thought was a great show early on. But they lost the ability to raise the stakes without being melodramatic and angsty. Like Ackels brought the writers with him from his soap days. That show is unwatchable now for me, but after 10 seasons, I need to see it to the end.

Arrow season 1 for me was awesome. Fast forward to season 3, and it looks like the show is devolving in to pure angst.

You can have drama, and high stakes without your protagonists being emotional retards. I just completely become detached from the story when I see that. Typically when one goes through trying circumstances, they grow and become the wiser for it after a period of mourning or adjustment. They carry those experiences with them because they taught them lessons, but they don't wear them on their sleeve like a teenager unless they are manic or bi-polar. I don't expect these people to pile on baggage like a mule. That's not interesting tv to me.
