Mike Flanagan's 5 Netflix Miniseries

Mike Flanagan made 5 miniseries for Netflix. I've watched The Haunting of Hill House (10 episodes), The Haunting of Bly Manor (9 episodes), and Midnight Mass (7 episodes). I loved all 3 but found the two haunted house ones to be really slow on the pacing. MM got the pacing right and was just the best of his first three, might go down as is best for Netflix. Really loved it and wish it had a disc release. Next up is The Midnight Club (10 episodes) and The Fall of the House of Usher (8 episodes). My understanding is most of these were miniseries while The Midnight Club was meant to be a 2-season show, cancelled after 1. Is it still worth checking out, or should I skip ahead to the Usher one?

What do you think of each Netflix series from Flanagan? I don't mind spoilers for the later two, but if their big ones, spoilers, please. :)

I've still never seen The Midnight Club (I really should but once Netflix canned it it sorta fell off my radar). My rankings of the others is as follows.

1. The Haunting of Hill House is a stone cold classic, five stars, no notes. Utterly terrifying and utterly heartbreaking.
2. Midnight Mass, Flanagan basically does his version of Salem's Lot and it's glorious. Samantha Sloyan gives us one of the most evil villains in a long, long time.
3. The Fall of the House of Usher. It's very good, but after the above I was really hoping for more scares.
4. The Haunting of Bly Manor. Too sappy, a terrible realisation of England (and given how many of the cast were British that's bad) After Hill House a big disappointment, but did have it's moments.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was disappointed by Bly Manor. The friend who wanted me to watch both miniseries said the second one was too sappy too. Midnight Mass, I watched it all so fast. It was like watching a 7-part movie. House of Usher, what's the gist, and did you overall like it?

Even though I've never watched Succession, I've heard it's like succession, only with more horror. There are scares, just nowhere near the number there is with Hill House. A lot of gory kills though. Carla Gugino is superb and Bruce Greenwood has a speech about lemons that's worth the price of admission alone, and is a damning indictment of capitalism into the bargain :)

I've not seen Succession: film or series? Bruce Geenwood is in it? Does it condemn capitalism or corporatism?

I wouldn't bother. Great cast, but it was intended as more of a "Goosebumps" style, ongoing, series with an overarching storyline tying the short stories together, but it got cancelled before any real payoff.

Yeah I got that impression, I'm just torn because I like Flanagan's work so much.

I've only watched House of Usher. I watched because I'm a huge Poe fan, and I was quite happy with it. As said above, Gugino and Greenwood are outstanding. It's beautifully shot too.

Why not watch? I'm working through all 5 of his shows: 3 down, 2 to go.

If one doesn’t mind watching an unfinished series, go ahead. Not everyone does, however. For me, it’s like picking up a novel where someone tore out the last half.

I think The Haunting of Hill House is exceptional. It's something really special. Beautifully acted, well plotted, and weaves itself together very well at the end. Highly recommended.

When I dived into this one, it was for two reasons. Loved the 1999 film, and a friend wanted me to see it, because he loves "ghost story" horror. It was a fun 10-parter.
