Watching Babylon 5 for the first time... *Spoilers, duh*

I'm so jealous of anybody who gets to watch Babylon 5 for the first time.

Although, watching it for the 7th or 8th time isn't so bad either.

QFT**2

I hosted a mini-marathon this weekend, centered around a specific theme. Now I'm going through the whole series again. Oh woe is me.

I've been rewatching it as well, part of me would like to be on the panel but of course that decision is up to you.

I rewatch B5 every couple of years. But now that I'm in a full time job, and with all the new shows to watch on the internet now... I really can't afford to get sucked into a B5 rewatch

I just want to skip ahead to "Sleeping in Light" and listen to the voiceover at the end.

I know what you're saying ....

I know what you're saying ....

But then this is another of those journeys I enjoy taking, a journey of a 100+ episodes that begins with a single scene. :D

Yeah, I want to watch that scene, but I also know how much more poignant it is after watching the entire show, so I am going to hold off and power through the series again.

Maybe my memory fails me. Would you be so kind and send me a PM to point that spoiler out? I'd appreciate it.

I think it's
the fact that Sheridan and Delenn form the Interstellar Alliance and has a twenty year period of peace

Okay, doesn't that image constitute a little bit of a spoiler?

Normally, I'd say no since the series has been over with for so long. BUT... this is a thread where the OP is watching the series for the first time and requested no information beyond what he's currently watching be posted,... and I was not thinking when I posted this. Thanks for catching my goof, which has been corrected.

Definitely. After I'm done with my Star Trek Series re-watch (just finished "Yesterday's Enterprise" tonight) I'm quite certain my next Bab5 and Farscape re-watches will be next enqueue and I think those special moments will be best watched in context.

Opinions vary regarding Season 5. I guess I would put it this way:
[snip]
Why are you even discussion season 5 when the OP is only half-way through season 3? C'mon, show some common courtesy.

Uh, I commented on my opinion of the quality of Season 5 without getting anywhere close to spoiler territory. This came after about 10 posts in a row in which other people also commented on the quality of Season 5 without getting anywhere close to spoiler territory.

"In the Beginning" also has a line that spoils a small part of the resolution of "Rising Star."

Correct. "In the Beginning" spoils events from as late as "Rising Star" (4x21). It really shouldn't be viewed until at least the end of Season 4. But I would agree that it's probably better to watch after the end of Season 5. It's a nice coda to the series. And watching it in the middle of the series kind of breaks up the flow.

personally, I say wait until after watching all the seasons and watch in the beginning with the movies if for no other reason that the blink and you'll miss it spoiler and the cast changes they made (I liked the actress and character of Lt. Commander Takashima better than Ivanova)

Indeed.

Heh, I'm on my fourth run through. Amazing, each run through has been "an experience".

First time was in first run broadcast. Wow, that was the best time. Discovering it all, seeing it for the first time with all it's twists and turns and jaw dropping moments....with an ending that was just...perfect. For me, the most perfect ending a t.v. show ever had.

The second time..the second time you catch all the little hints and foreshadowing, some are planted so early in the series....it's just friggin awesome.

The third time was a couple of years ago and I decided to do something that go round that I'd always wanted to do....I watched it all, every episode, every movie, and Crusade...all of it in "in universe" order.

Needless to say,
"Deconstruction Of Falling Stars" was a bit...choppy. I watched the first segment, then season 5, then the movies, Crusade, Lost Tales, Sleeping In Light, then the rest of the episode. I decided to watch each segment independent of the framing story, because I wanted to see each little bit in it's proper "in universe" place. Though I guess I could've made it easier on myself and just watched the whole ep at the end of the run since it did have the framing story. I don't recall how I handled the framing story tho....obviously, I watched the very end where our guy leaves Earth, that was the final scene in this go round. The one thing that I did NOT do when watching Sleeping In Light, was watch the end credits.

Knowing how DOFS ends relative to SIL in the "big ending" dept. I kept that awesome music and credits sequence for then. Even with that, it still works better with SIL as the last ep. The music and end credit sequence compliments it much better....still...I'm very glad to have watched B5 in this manner, to have it all in it's proper place. It was as much "an experience" as the first two times".

And now this time, I'm introducing this world to a very casual sci-fi watcher...and I think, like most of us, he see's the flaws, but also see those parts which are just awesome. He's already hooked and we just finished "By Any Means Necessary". Man, he has no clue how awesome this show is about to get. :)

Actually, I would place it between seasons 3 and 4, as that is a good point for a break and it's not like there are any spoilers to season 4 in the film.

Pretty sure that there's at least one spoiler that's best avoided until after season 4's Atonement.

Maybe my memory fails me. Would you be so kind and send me a PM to point that spoiler out? I'd appreciate it.

Tried, but it doesn't seem to want me to send you anything!

Spoilers in question pertain to Delenn -
Wasn't it first discovered in Atonement that it was Delenn that effectively called for the holy war against Earth? Think that was a pretty important plot point of Atonement wasn't it? I only pose these as questions as it's ages since I've seen the episode in question!

Okay, first of all, in response to all those who gave me advice on when to watch "In the Beginning", I thank you.

I think I'll go ahead and watch it at the end of the fourth season since I don't want anything spoiled for me, even a 'blink and you miss it' sort of thing. That said, I wouldn't mind taking a break from the main show for a couple of hours just to shake things up a little.

We'll see, though. If the fourth season's finale leaves me on some big cliffhanger-esque moment I'll probably just keep going.

It's stiff, much like TNG was in its first season. Pretty much any sff series, but it gets better fairly quickly.

Yeah, definitely. I've seen a big improvement with just about everyone.

Ugh...well, I just popped in "The Gathering." Looks like I'm rewatching the show.

:p

Oh, I already watched "The Gathering". That one I was told to watch first regardless and I can see why. Shaky as it was, it was the first of two canonical pilots, whereas "In the Beginning" is a prequel not to be watched until later.

I definitely prefer Ivanova over Takashima though, personally, but it's kind of hard to say that with 100% absolution since I only had so long to see Takashima.

^Did you watch the original cut of 'The Gathering' or the special edition? I ask because the former as I recall cut out Takashima's most important character scene with Dr. Kyle (and Sinclair's come to that) plus it had all of her dialogue redubbed to "soften"her (at the studio's insistence.) The special edition fixes all that and gets rid of the silly zoo scene and most glimpses of the gorilla. ;)

As for the movies, if you want to take a breather after season four then you may as well have a look a Thirdspace then as well. That one takes place in some non-specific period somewhere in the middle of the season, but since it's a standalone story it doesn't affect any of the episodes (though it might spoil some early season 4 stuff.)

Thirdspace is the weirdest of the movies, I think, just because I watch it and go, "Why?" It's not a bad story or anything; it's just such a random story that you wonder why it warranted a movie. You can really watch it whenever you want.

Actually, and hopefully this isn't too much of a spoiler, but Season 4 ends in such a way that you'll feel comfortable taking a break if you want to watch some of the movies then.

I watched the special edition, so far as I can tell. I heard about the gorilla... saw it for about two seconds. And is Takashima's pivotal scene the one where she mentions coffee at some point? Did they seriously not have that in the original version? Good mercy me if so.

I just love Ivanova is all. Even all her Russian jokes in the first season; I've noticed there are a lot of complaints on that one and I don't blame people for thinking as such but I liked her from square one. Heck, "TKO" didn't completely fail for me because I got to learn more about Ivanova. Love that one.

I was actually thinking I'd watch Thirdspace precisely where JMS' Master List on The Lurker's Guide dictates. It seems to have a specific point for some reason.

Naw, that's fine. I'm glad to hear it, really!

I believe due to character movements and costuming issues, the only place it can fit is between the pre-credits opening of "Atonement" and the rest of the episode.
