Watching Babylon 5 for the first time... *Spoilers, duh*

And that's a GOOD thing!

You're right, it is! I should start formatting this sucker a bit more strikingly if I find myself going on such long rants in the future, though. Maybe I'll embolden the episode titles next time the mood strikes me.

Another thing I forgot to mention re: "Severed Dreams" was how excellent it was to see races coming together as they were in order to defend against the Earth-led threat. Specifically, I'm referring to the Narns in the fight against the soldiers and the Minbari coming to the rescue. These three races have forged something here; the Army of Light is indeed coming together.

I love the moment when the soldiers breach the wall and the fact that it's not about the action. It's about desperation and sadness that things have come to this point and there is no other way to deal with it except to fight fire with fire. Christopher Franke's music works brilliantly in that scene and also when Churchill rams Roanoke. You really feel the weight of the situation.

Oh yeah, I really did.

This was actually the first time in the history of the show that I could definitely say I was 100% into an action scene on the station. Franke's music topped even that haunting melody found while Londo looked upon his atrocities in "Struggle". When that hatch blew open, by god did I feel it.

This show had better not let me down. Its middle parts are almost frighteningly good sometimes.

Also Corwin's moment of decision was well played. I can imagine him finally putting together the questions Sheridan and Ivanova were asking and sticking with his unit. He starts to develop into a fun part of the crew through very small scenes. It goes to show what a decent actor can do with a small part. He is one of my favorite background characters.

I'm pretty damn sure that you won't be disappointed.

Sounds good to me!

You know who he's reminding me of, actually? All the bit players in SG-1 and SGA. Corwin has become one of those bricks of foundation for the station and there's something about that role among minor characters that has always excited me.

Except Corwin has already proven a more genuinely interesting sort of character than even SG-1's good ol' reliable Walter. That moment of decision was very well-played, indeed.

Aside from a brief lull at the start of season 5, what comes in the rest of the series is arguably better than what's come before it so far. It's certainly no less. The final arc of episodes towards the end of the series are still probably as good as anything that I've ever seen on television.

I'm glad to hear it. I mean, I figured it wouldn't get bad or anything since I always see people arguing over whether it's the third or the fourth season that takes the proverbial crown. Season five used to have me a little worried because a lot of folks trash it, but honestly, it can't be horrendous. It just can't be after what I've seen lately.

Season five just starts rocky because of how things were going behind the scenes between waiting for season renewal or prep for early cancellation. Honestly, the bad rep is somewhat undeserved except for 'the hair' ahhhh 'the hair!'

Season 5 may have a rocky start, and it does, but the latter half of the season is about as epic as the show ever got. Awesome stuff. It's easier to forgive the sluggish start to the season because the end is so great.

Opinions vary regarding Season 5. I guess I would put it this way:

You may not like how the story ends, but I highly doubt you'll be ticked off by it. Unlike, say, the ending of "Lost", which divided fans, and was viewed by some as a big copout. B5 isn't like that. At the end, it feels like a (mostly) coherent story, in which all of the major mysteries are answered, and there's payoff on the major story arcs.

I find the last season more boring than Seasons 2-4, but it's nothing like a "Lost" or "X-Files" scenario, where the whole story just kind of collapses in on itself, and you feel like the writers have been trying to trick you into thinking that they knew what they were doing.

@Mr Light:

I, er... haven't said anything about that episode yet. O_o

>>> I said something because you voted against it in the other thread. Did you minus something without watching it? :)

A little late joining the thread, but I completely agree. Honestly, I don't think the beginning of Season 5 is all that bad either; it's just seems like it because of how awesome Seasons 3 and 4 were. It's biggest problem, I think, is that it's about a story arc that you don't really care about all that much.

That said, yes, as soon as the initial arc of the season is concluded, the show goes right back to form and becomes epic once again. I would rank the latter half of Season 5 right up there with Seasons 3 and 4.

Gah, now I need to rewatch this show! I finally managed to watch "Crusade" for the first time and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I wish it had been allowed to continue.

I know I say this every time we talk about Severed Dreams, but Jeff's a new audience. :) -
When Capt Hiroshi kamikazied the Roanoke, it's the only moment on TV that has ever made me sit up suddenly from my comfy recliner and yell "RAM IT DOWN THEIR THROATS, BABY!!" out load. My wife gave me an odd look, but I couldn't help it.
