Watch List to Prep for ST: Picard

My SO has never seen any trek while I have seen it all. So I got her into Trek with the Kelvin Trek movies. Then followed up by Discovery (that was before Picard was even announced). Then we watched all of Voyager (half way through was when Picard was announced) and are now almost done with all of TNG. We just have to watch all of the TNG movies and we'll be ready!
At some point after Picard Season 1 ends she still has all of DS9 and TOS to watch, and then rest of TOS movies. Maybe the weirdest order to watch Star Trek, but it worked for her as she is hooked and now will be a Trekkie forever :)

I just watched Star Trek: Voyager's "Author, Author". It looked like something that would be relevant, given what looks like slave android labor or something on Picard.

It's been a while since I've seen an episode of Voyager. Couldn't believe how dated it looked.

Yep, and it doesn’t help that only TNG is available in HD while everything else is still SD.

I just watched TNG Family again and noticed how he says, with some hesitation and a very sad look across the vines, that he'll never leave starfleet. Some 20 years later, he will. At the end, he says he knows where to go if he ever doubts where he belongs again. It seems the new show might fit beautifully!

I got too busy during and after the holidays, and never really made it to the complete list. So, I had to abbreviate my pre-watch (which started on Monday night!). Since I was also watching with my wife who doesn't want to know all the minutia (e.g. Romulan stuff, Data/humanity stuff, etc...), we focused exclusively on Borg episodes:

1. BoBW I and II
2. I, Borg
3. Scorpion

We had recently seen Family in syndication, so we just watched the intro to see the vineyard. I had never actually seen Scorpion, and was reminded of why I hadn't. Voyager just doesn't do it for me -- dull characters, horrible acting and blah writing. I gave up on it after the first season.

We may try to get to All Good Things and First Contact before next Thursday, but if not, I don't think either would add to understanding events in Picard.

"The Measure of a Man" seems like it will be a big piece of the puzzle. For those who have it on Blu-ray, there is an extended cut of the episode.

I think what I just did was too extreme. Two weeks ago, I was on "Galaxy's Child". Two days ago, I was on "Tapestry". 50 TNG episodes in the span of 10 days. I can't even bring myself to look at any more. But at least I'm closer to where I want to be in the re-watch.

Though it wasn't as bad as my watching all 63 episodes of Breaking Bad during the week of Christmas in 2013.

"The Measure of a Man"
"Q Who"
"Who Watches the Watchers?"
"The Defector"
"Allegiance"
"Captain's Holiday"
"The Best of Both Worlds" Parts I and II
"Family"
"Qpid"
"The Drumhead"
"Darmok"
"I, Borg"
"The Inner Light"
"Chain of Command" Parts I and II
"Tapestry"
"Starship Mine"
"Lessons"
"The Chase"

I'm sure there's some stuff from S1 (which I amputated from my re-watch but will circle around back to) and S7 too, but that's where I'm leaving this list.

EDIT (12/17/19): I've updated this list to include the rest of Season 6 and I've thrown in "Who Watches the Watchers?" from S3. How could I have left this one out?

It's been a month since I updated this. Now that I've re-watched the entire series, here's my list of Big Picard episodes:

"The Last Outpost" (it gives great insight into Picard's early characterization)
"The Battle"
"We'll Always Have Paris"
"The Measure of a Man"
"Q Who"
"Who Watches the Watchers?"
"The Defector"
"Allegiance"
"Captain's Holiday"
"The Best of Both Worlds" Parts I and II
"Family"
"Qpid"
"The Drumhead"
"Darmok"
"I, Borg"
"The Inner Light"
"Chain of Command" Parts I and II
"Tapestry"
"Starship Mine"
"Lessons"
"The Chase"
"Gambit" Parts I and II (just to see a different side of Picard)
"Attached"
"Bloodlines"
"All Good Things"

I tried to watch Nemesis last night and fell asleep. I don't hate any Star Trek, TV of Movie. But Nemesis is a hard watch sometimes.

^ I’d deffo make NEM the very last thing you watch, before popping on the first episode of Picard. Fit together perfectly.

I just finished watching Star Trek: Nemesis. All caught up now. I have to warn anyone watching this before PIC, even knowing what happens, it still feels pretty melancholy at the end. I don't know if somber is how I want to head into Picard but Picard's in not so good a place, so maybe it works.

Essential Borg eps to prepare for Picard:

https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/star-trek-picard-essential-borg-episodes

(FWIW, I'd add "The Raven" and "The Gift" to that list.)

Aside from "Q Who?" and "Descent I/II", aren't those all the Borg episodes? Doesn't seem too meaningful to me.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, I'm fast-tracking the watch list because of the holidays, since I didn't get around to starting until last week. In addition to watching "BoBW I+II", "I, Borg", and "Scorpion II" (skipped "Family" because I was watching with my wife, who vetoed it because we'd just seen it recently in syndication).

Since then, I've watched the first 30 minutes of "First Contact" (wife fell asleep, and I got bored since I knew what would happen). Going forward, I think I'll watch the last 30 minutes of "Nemesis", if only for two reasons central to ST:Picard -- Data's death, and TNG ending with "Blue Skies". Following that, I'll pop in ST'09 to watch the mindmeld scene.. and then it's BRING ON THURSDAY!!

They skipped "Child's Play".

Do what you will with the list.

Ah, a Voyager episode I didn't watch with a character I've only heard mentioned on this board. I'm going to assume the Picard show-runners are targeting TNG fans like me who have only a loose knowledge of DS9, VOY, and ENT.

After all, look at the returning characters: Data, Riker, Troi, Hugh. 7 of 9 was novel and popular enough to break free of the confines of Voyager that even I knew who she was, having never actually seen any of those episodes. The plotlines? Destruction of Romulus (need to have seen ST'09, which probably 99% of TNG fans did), building a race of slave androids (pure TNG), etc...

Face it: this show is marketed toward those of us who don't really care about much beyond TNG, and quite frankly that's smart. Catering too much to the "extended universe" of TNG (i.e. DS9 and VOY) overcomplicates what should be a focused story.
