Watch List to Prep for ST: Picard

Pretty close to mine. I'll be leaving out The Inner Light and Insurrection, but adding Unification.

Here’s mine:

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION

101/102 – Encounter at Farpoint (the pilot)

216 – Q Who? (Q introduces the Federation to the Borg)

326/401 – The Best of Both Worlds (Picard’s assimilation, which has a long-term effect)

402 – Family (first trip to Picard’s vineyard)

507/508 – Unification (Spock on Vulcan, setting up for the 2009 movie)

523 – I, Borg (introduces Hugh)

615 – Tapestry (a major event in Picard’s past)

626/701 – Descent (Hugh returns, major Borg story)

725/726 – All Good Things… (the end of TNG)

STAR TREK GENERATIONS (the final voyage of the Enterprise-D.)

STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (Picard faces the Borg in a direct sequel to The Best of Both Worlds)

STAR TREK: VOYAGER

326/401 – Scorpion (introduces Seven of Nine)

515/516 – Dark Frontier (Seven’s backstory)

626/701 – Unimatrix Zero (a tale of liberated Borg)

725/726 – Endgame (Voyager series finale)

STAR TREK: NEMESIS (the last TNG story… until now!)

STAR TREK [2009] (Romulus is destroyed in the prime 24th Century, Spock chases Nero back in time which creates a new timeline.)

These are the people who made a sequel to the first-ever episode of Star Trek, which probably made no sense unless you'd seen it, and made it an essential part of the current season-long arc.

They're gonna pull something crazy out their asses and Picard will only make sense if you have an encyclopedic knowledge of "Justice", "The Big Goodbye" and Voyager's "11:59"

I doubt it. Just because that ep of DISCO referenced the first pilot, doesn't mean you had to have seen it for the story to make sense. I'm sure there will be stuff that is enhanced by a robust Trek knowledge, but unlikely that it will require one.

i made a google doc of episodes for a couple friends to watch. my list included 75 episodes (from all three 24th century series) and movies. i went so far as to include "who watches the watchers" in case the mintakan tapestry shows up. i might've gone overboard.

I've been re-watching TNG. I amputated the first season (I tried re-watching TNG before three times, and gave up each time because I couldn't get through the first season) and started with the second. I'm in the third season right now.

I started the re-watch in January and have been on-and-off (I'm back on again). In case I run out of time and don't think I'll make it up to at least "All Good Things" before Picard premieres (making it up through Nemesis and the key VOY episodes would be even better), I'll fall back on the list I created here as Plan B.

Pretty much how my list would be, especially with the VOY episodes now that we now Seven will be in it. Although if the person is watching Star Trek for the first time (doubtful, but you never know), I'd recommend that after they make it though the list, to go back to maybe season 3 or so of TNG and start watching all the episodes just for the heck of it.

I tried re-watching TNG before three times, and gave up each time because I couldn't get through the first season

This is kind of besides the point, but I often wonder how many people (basically new fans from the Kelvin timeline films) have decided they wanted to give TNG a try based on all the great things they've heard, only to make it a handful of episodes into Season 1 and go, "What da frak is dis?!" It does get better, kids! Just hang in there! :)

It's probably a good thing we have social media today, where they can see all over the place when people say the show gets better.

I’m a massive Disco fan, yet have never seen an episode of TOS. I completely understood the episode and the story behind it. I grew up on TNG and obviously have a vast knowledge of TOS, despite having never watched it. I agree that I doubt you’ll have to have a vast knowledge of everything Picard related to understand what’s going on in the show. The last time we saw him was 20+ years ago anyway. I’m sure a lot of the TNG earlier episodes (except TBOBW obviously) will be irrelevant to the person Picard is today and the focus of the show. I’m sure they’ll provide enough back story. And if people are still confused, google is their friend

I'm still only in the middle of the third season of TNG in my re-watch. It sounds even worse when you consider I chopped off the first season and started nine months ago. At this rate, there's no way I'll make it up to "All Good Things" before January 23rd. I'll have to burn through it during Christmas Week, or not at all. Otherwise, I'll get as far as however I get, then keep re-watching as Picard airs. I'm just unintentionally draaaaging my feet with this.

I was thinking about a rewatch the other day, and decided to keep it simple:

Encounter at Farpoint
Q Who
BoBW / Family
I, Borg
Scorpion pt 2 (though this is one I could probably skip)
All Good Things
Last 10 minutes of Nemesis
ST'09

Watching an old TNG now -- has anyone suggested "Face of the Enemy" as a pre-watch episode? I'd forgotten all about this one. It's about dissidents against the Romulan government. Seems like it might be relevant.

Looking over the list I originally made:
It's hard to say exactly since we still know precious little of the actual plot. But if you want a list of key Picard episodes:
Encounter at Farpoint
The Battle
The Measure of a Man
Sarek
The Best of Both Worlds
Family
Darmok
Unification
Chain of Command
Tapestry
Gambit
All Good Things
Given what we now know, I would add I Borg and Descent, to get background on Hugh, but otherwise I think that list stands.

Given Spock is missing/dead and Romulus was destroyed - no, I don't really think it brings much to the 'current' Romulan storyline. Those politics dies with Roulus in that now, I'd think Romulans are just concerned with surviving and reclaiming what they can in the current situation (Whatever STP shows that to be). YMMV

Plus Sirtis acting is atrocuious in the whole thing - she's the weakest actor in the bunch on that Romulan ship.

Dear Mr. Noname Given,

It is my everlasting and fervent desire to see the words of this page reach you in good health and spirits. As the words flow from my mind's eye to the tips of my fingers to reach the pointed edge of my pen, I find my attention wandering to sound of pelting rain on the window adjacent to my desk, the silhouette of my pen's shadow prominent on my letter to you from the flash of the thundering lightning outside.

May I ask that you describe who Roulus is, what he wears, and his demeanor so that I may identify him when I next sit to view the wonderful tv show referred to as Star Trek.

Many thanks to you. I hope to hear a response from you by this time next week. Please do send along word as soon as you can.

Sincerely,

Mr. (The Beav) Tylers

P.S. I gave my buddy a ring a couple nights ago. He passed along word of a new Picard forum. Is that a place where I go to send emails to other people about Picard? If so, please relay instructions and directions to guide me along to the forum.
