Was Transformers Generation One canceled in Season 3?

I see that there is a Transformers comic coming out next year picking up directly from the end of the Marvel series:

Back in April, we wrote about a online petition driven by fans who wanted to see IDW pick up the old Marvel Transformers comic book where it left off with issue #80 in 1991, in the same fashion as the publisher’s current GI Joe: A Real American Hero series. At that point, it was a possibility, but as of last week’s “IDW and Hasbro: 2012 Transformations” panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego, it’s official.

They’re actually starting with an issue #80.5, designed to catch up new readers or old-school fans who may have forgotten a few details in the interim two decades. In 2012 (undetermined as to exactly when, but said to likely be first half), will be #81, which will run until the story wraps in #100. The creative team will be writer Simon Furman and artist Andrew Wildman, the same crew on the book at the end of the Marvel series. The petition currently has 2,779 signatures, more than twice the number it was at in April.

It sounds like we need to get ready, quite literally... for a whole WORLD of PAIN!

But IDW had no choice. Can they DO LESS?

At least some day the series will be OVER-- FINISHED!

Some people might not get these, it's TIME I MADE A STAND!

I mean they might be WELL AND TRULY confused if they've never read a Simon Furman Transformers comic!

It's time I gave them A SHORT, SHARP LESSON with some context!

;)

Are the Transformers 1 through 80 available in paperback by IDW? These would have to be reprints of the Marvel comic. If IDW has the rights did they just publish the bset of Marvel's Transformers? Or did they publish all 80 issues? As a new Transformers fan who just saw Genertion one; I'd be curious to see if the comic version was better than the actual animated show.

I remember as a wee little thing being rather confused as to why the cartoon stopped after the 3-part Headmasters "finale". I do remember vaguely the movie being split up and shown afterwards. However, being a 5 year-old who woke up at 6am to watch cartoons on Saturday, I had no idea what was happening nor for what reason.

It makes sense, however, that Hasbro pulled funding. From what I read on the Transformers wiki about that time period, the popularity of Transformers was on the decline, starting with the movie when the toys dropped considerably in quality. When the Headmasters and Target Masters came out, even though I so young anything Transformers got me excited, I was less than thrilled that they were basically repackaging old toys with new gimmicks and expecting people to buy them again.

By the time Pretenders and the micro-machine things came along, I was done with Transformers.

They've done some reprints of the Marvel material, and starting later this year they're going to be doing systemic omnibus reprints of the Marvel US and Marvel UK runs.

I liked season 3 a lot more than the first two seasons because it felt fresh and new. I was really surprised when it started. I had no idea that the series was going to pick up from the movie. Boy what a treat that was. Somehow though, Transformers fizzled out with my age group and I don't have any clear memory of the show ending or being cancelled. I vaguely remember Optimus Prime coming back and some Headmaster stuff which I didn't much care for, but that's about it. Transformers was kind of just "gone" after that, but so were my friends and I.

Fast forward a quarter of a century and I'm watching the show again on DVD. I'll be able to see the episdoes I missed or forgot about and get a new perspective on things, not to mention enjoy a show I loved as a kid. I'm still in season one right now, looking forward to seasons two and three when all the new autobots and decepticons show up. Right now, the cast feels pretty limited. Can't wait to see how the rest of the series holds up.

Iroically I became a fan after the movie. Where else could you see the main character finished off with most of the cast? I didn't know how Rodimus Prime was being prepared for being a new leader. I thought it was going to be the Robert Stack voiced character. I was shocked when an underdog like Rodimus got the title.

Anther elememt was the celebrity voices. Where else could you hear Leonard Nimoy as a villian? I was so used to him in the Spock role that I wanted to see what the characters were about. Orsen Wells, I remember from Citizen Kane. I was very curious as to what character he'd be voicing in the film.

It was my interest in Marvel's involvment in the animated series, that attracted me to this movie. I was hoping to see cameos by other Marvel characters. However that never came to pass.:vulcan::klingon::borg::cardie::)

You should know, though, that maybe four or five issues or so out of the 80 issue Marvel run are omitted from the IDW printing because Marvel apparently didn't give them permission to print the early stories involving Circuit Breaker, or particularly Transformers #3 where Spider-Man had a cameo in his symbiote suit. Circuit Breaker does appear in several of the late issues though. So you'd probably need to find a comic place that has the missing issues if you want a full collection.

At the time, I didn't know or care about celebrity voices. It wasn't until much later that I found out who was involved.
