Well you need a birth certificate to get things like a passport in the UK.

Ditto in the USA. And I once needed to submit a copy to a potential employer--to prove I wasn't an illegal alien, I guess!

^ I did too for a early job, the job involved handling money and I had to be above a certain age for insurance reasons.

I remember the copy of the birth certificate had to have "the raised seal."

Who looks at their own birth certificate? I know I've been born. I don't need the paperwork to prove it.

Besides, most birth certificates are held by the government, aren't they? With copies issued on an as-needed basis, I thought.

I saw my own birth certificate almost since I learned to read, and it is in my possession. Has been since I got out of high school. Most jobs require such documentation.
