Was Reed too much of a whimp?

^And I don't feel so dumb! :p

"I'm watching, you Quark. I could morph into an eagle..." :rommie:

"Oh yeah, well why don't you try and morph into something interesting then?"

It really made this niner's day when I first saw that scene. Great stuff:)

^Sadly, yes. I don't think he was a wimp, just not well developed. (At least he wasn't Mayweather.) My favorite Reed moment was in 'Minefield.' He was willing to die to save the ship.

I also find it interesting that he seemed to be something of a tinkerer - managing to create that prototype forcefield and all.

Yeah, Reed was one of the most competent members of the crew.
(I'm still chuckling over the image of Reed calmly drinking tea on the bridge during a battle. Class act all the way!)

Middyseafort.

Trip as a redneck hick Garage car mechanic.

He would have been very intelligent and well educated.

He would have known higher Mathmatetics including Matematheical Logic.

He woulld know and undrstand Newtonian physics, relativety, Quantum physics and Quantum menchanics. He would have to know those things.

he had two engines an IMpulse engine and Warp drives. He had to know them itimately.

The Warp drives involved Matter and antimater. and those two cannot come into contact with one another or there will be one big explosion which would make dust of the Entrprise and everyone on board.

So there was some kind of containment field. What that would be I am not sure but my guess it would be llike a magnetic bottle.

Trip would have to know and understand that containment field.

Also eginerring would neeed back up power becaue if the ship lost all power the containment field would collapse and the Mattter and Anti-Matter would come into contact with e each other and BOOM.

So there would need to be another emergency power soource more than likely a small Atomic ractor generating power for a long time. So Trip would need to undertand that little item too.

He would need to be a doctorate graduate for all of that.

He ws no country bumpbkin. He was a very talented Engineer. Bright and educated.

With Trip you have something of a paradox don't you?

For him to do the job he does, he would have to be as intelligent and well-educated as you describe, yet they largely ignored any references to his intelligence and made him adhere to the catfish-eating Suth'n stereotype.

(Don't get me wrong, I love catfish. I'm from the South. Maybe that's why it irks me?)

That's the bloody thing, they gave this highly intelligent capable man an stereotypical 'ah shucks' over the top Southern US accent.
I assume that is was done to show what a regular guy he was but it just seems to obvious to me. Much like the American blockbuster where the hero is a Good old boy from the south and a great guy who loves his family, God and disburses righteous justice to those DamnYankees or Limey scum:rolleyes:.

Please note that this is an attack on the 'hollywood' (for want of a better term) version of the southern accents not on the actual accents themselves or the fine people of the South.

Anyway rant over...
