Was Pulaski really hated that much by the fans?

And that aspect of Starfleet's attitude was personified by Maddox, who, if he'd come aboard as a regular with that attitude, would have been just as hated for it...probably moreso, since we never saw any redeeming qualities in him.

But the hearing was to determine whether or not Data could be considered property, which means there'd been no such official ruling as of that point. Starfleet had allowed him to function as an autonomous human being for something like 19 years at that point, which demonstrates that while there may certainly have been those such as Maddox who felt that he was nothing but property, that attitude was not universal. Starfleet is an organization of individual beings, not a collective.

As for Pulaski's "character growth"--yes, given her shift in attitude, it's easiest to fill in the blanks by considering it to be growth. But as an arc that plays out on the screen, there's no satisfying epiphany moment there where we see an event or series of events cause a distinct change in Pulaski's attitude. And it's too bad, because they had more than one obvious opportunity. Her perspective was woefully absent from "The Measure of a Man"; and her experiences with Moriarty, a sentient hologram who was even more convincingly human than Data, could have caused her to see Data in a different light.

Her interaction with Data as of "Unnatural Selection" was just fine...I think they'd hit the right balance of compassion and skepticism. Their big mistake was overselling her attitude in the first couple of episodes, instantly making her contemptable in the eyes of many. First impressions are important. And even if they'd avoided that, there's still the McCoy clone aspect, which became insultingly blatant when they put in the transporterphobia gag.

Pulaski had a very wobbly start, but she's probably the strongest written female character in TNG.

I liked her. I don't have much else to say that hasn't already been said, but I wonder how the show would have panned out down the years without Crusher.

Pulaski was a fantastic character.

You won't always get along with everyone you're forced to work with and I don't see that changing no matter how "evolved" we become. I think Pulaski was a great example of that person in the office no one's really quite sure what to make of.

But I liked her better than Crusher because she shook things up and that ship needed someone to do it. Like Jadzia Dax observed years later, "That must have been one dull ship."

Not while Pulaski was around!

A great Crusher episode bit the dust when David Gerrold's "Blood and Fire" was shelved. Since then, Gerrold has reworked the script as a non ST "Starwolf" novel and an upcoming ST fan film for "Phase II".

In my opinion, Pulaski was the Next Generation's Doctor McCoy.
However I didn't like or dislike her anymore than Doctor Crusher.
I think she should've appeared later on in the TNG; or maybe on DS9; or a movie!
Although, I remember that's it's stated somewhere that Pulaski transferred from the USS Repulse; a Excelsior class starship. I would assume she was a doctor aboard that ship.
However in DS9, I think it's in the "In The Pale Moonlight" episode of season 6; it mentions that a ship called the Repulse was destroyed by the Jem'Hadar. If this was the same USS Repulse, than Pulaski maybe deceased.

I know many fans disliked Pulaski when she was first introduced on the show in season 2, but I always found it strange that aside from one offhand reference, she was never seen or mentioned again. She could have easily guest-starred in an episode down the line, or appeared in an alternate universe, etc. But that never happened. Was she really hated so much that the producers never wanted to bring her back?

I liked her better than Beverly Crusher, she was certainly a more "realistic" doctor and I think she quickly grew to care and respect data as a sentient being. Her transporter phobia was a bit too McCoy-esque, but I enjoyed her stark honesty and comfort around the captain. I think she was a good addition.

I liked Pulaski. Her McCoyish crustiness was a welcome relief to the goody two-shoes of the rest of the crew. I hope she lived long and prospered.

I liked Pulaski. Sure, in a few ways she was a bit too McCoy-esque (the transporter thing was the most obvious example), but on the whole she was an enjoyable, interesting character played by a greatly underrated actress. I liked Crusher as well but I wouldn't have been sorry if Pulaski had remained.

Pulaski was fine by me. I'm a bit apathetic about Crusher. She's always seemed cold (or, as Q put it, shrill). Pulaski was a retread of Bones, but at least she got more character moments and screen time than Crusher typically got over the course of a season.

Truthfully, I think TNG had far and away the weakest doctor characters in Star Trek. Neither hold a candle to the other four series' doctors in terms of screen time or personality.

Shame she couldn't of had a Wedding Cameo in Nemesis; she could even of been Riker's stepmother. And it would of been fun to of had the two Doctors on screen together.

I wonder how seasons 3-7 and the TNG movies would have gone with her (lack of?) involvement.

i liked pulaski too. she was the only kind of butch female they ever had on the show, and she was in charge; with a pair of cojones rivaled only by riker.

Well, I loved her. I was sad to see her go, but I was ecstatic to get Crusher back. I only wish she could have returned as a guest at least once to give her a little more closure.

Pulaski v. Crusher? No contest whatsoever.

Pulaski was the kind of character TNG needed more of, given the happy-happy-joy-joy overkill of the majority of the characters we did get.

Too bad she wasn't still around when DS9 came up, she would have been a perfect transfer to the new show along with O'Brien. (Although, I'm not sure what you would have done with Dr. Bashir (but the thought of the interaction between the two has got my imagination running)).

Pulaski was a fine character. Someone who stood out among the bland array of "we never fight with each other" TNG characters.

Crusher never did anything of note. Once they decided she and Picard weren't going to get together, she became utterly pointless.
