Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 movie)

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
i just finished re-watching it and now i remember some of the reasons i disliked it. i wouldn't say i hated it, it just seemed so bland considering the higher 'production values' and the bigger 'canvas' a film provides to the show's writers.

it would have been interesting if the replicators had actually been re-activated prior to the movie. that way, we could have seen how the Ori and how the prior's would have handled them. imagine seeing a prior trying to throw hundreds of thousands of replicators away as they move in to attack.

we didn't see any great space battles either. the only space battle was the 4 ori ships attacking an incapacitated earth ship. the finale of s9 was much better.

I was really bothered by the inclusion of the replicators. They really should just not have been in that movie at all. This should have been about defeating the Ori, not taking side-trips into other villains that had already been dealt with.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

I can't say I cared much for either SG-1 movie, but Continuum was the better of the two despite being essentially a retread of "Moebius."

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

Yes, it was the worst kind of cartoon. It had the hammy feel of the last two seasons of SG-1 carried over. I wasn`t a big fan of Claudia Black`s character nor any of the Ori prop/set design either.

I much prefered the feel of SG: Continuum and I'm a big fan of the SG:U as well (just throwing that out there :))

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

Ark of Truth was pretty awful. The moron writers and producers went on and on about how they had so much material to tell about the Ori and how they couldn't finish their story in a 2 hour finale, so instead, we get a 2 hour film... half of which was about replicators. Mallozzi at his best.

But at least it had action. Continuum was so booooorrrring for the first half and fan-wanky for the second (a million gazillion Hataks attack Earth? Puhhlease)

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

The Ark of Truth was a bad movie. I bought the DVD and only watched it once with no desire to go back for a re-watch.
I agree with Robert Maxwell about Continuum, it was just a rehash of Moebius. However I really liked Moebius, and it was fun seeing all of the old system lords again so it didn't bother me too much.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

Ark of Truth looked really low budget and the CGI was cartoony looking. I don't know why they changed it.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

It's not a movie. It's a two hour episode. A rather boring one. Nothing exciting about it. Replicators made about as much sense as randomly bringing back the System Lords would have.

Continuum was also a really long episode, but I enjoyed it.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

It's a 60-minute episode padded out to feature length with an unnecessary subplot about the Replicators, as I recall. And the episode itself gives a rather cursory look at what could have been an interesting ethical dilemma, as well as a rather quick end to the Ori arc.

CONTINUUM was better, even if it was mostly a repeat of older material.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

Yeah, this is why I'm not really hankering for more SG-1 movies. They already made two and neither one was particularly good. I have no reason to believe another one would be better.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

I actually found Ark of Truth to be the better movie. It's pretty enjoyable, if a little predictable. EG, the title of the damn movie pretty much makes it clear once you hear the plot how it's going to be resolved. The Replicators returning was completely unnecessary, even if the IOA guy being turned into a Terminator Replicator was kind of cool.

Continuum, I was pretty harsh on when I first saw it, though my opinion has softened somewhat on subsequent viewings. Still, now that SG-1 has moved onto movies and we're only going to get new SG-1 stories on a limited basis, an alternate timeline is not a good idea at all, especially a reset button which negates most of what happened. Plus most of the cameos from SG-1's past were rather pointless. And of course it is a retread of Moebius.

Mallozzi at his best.

Mallozzi had nothing to do with the SG-1 movies. Ark of Truth was written by Robert Cooper, and Continuum by Brad Wright.

I agree. I'm not sure if it was originally supposed to be a movie or episode but it felt like a LOOONG episode to me. Parts were interesting, but not many.

I would argue the opposite. Continuum feels like a two-parter, to the point that you can pin-point where they would split it in half. AoT has the pacing and structure of a proper movie, and I think they did well with the budget they had. In fact I think I enjoy it more every time I see it, the dialogue is so much tighter than that of the series.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

Ark of Truth did have some annoying things they did because it was a movie and not TV, like dragging scenes out because you don't have to worry about commercial time. Like when we see the IOA guy setting up his recording equipment.

Also, why were all the lights off in the SGC? What is this, the Enterprise D in Generations?

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

Same thing, pretty much. The cinematographers were thrilled that they could actually take some time to set up, so they could afford to do things a bit more complex than just bathing the scene in light.

Re: Was anyone else disappointed with 'Ark of Truth' (the first SG1 mo

Both SG1 movies were pretty disappointing.

It's probably because they were using film instead of the HD digital cameras they've used since season 8 of SG-1.

I concur whole heartedly ....
