Warp Drive in JJTrek

I hadn't really thought about how the crew were blind until they arrived at Vulcan (ie. dropped out of warp). I like it :)

It actually makes sense scientifically. While a ship is in a subspace warp bubble, it strikes me that there would be a lot of interference to cut through.

Also, objects such as Planets and Stars are going by so fast, and for the most part are at significant distance, it's like looking through a long range telescope.

Seeing that there is a planetary system, and perhaps even changes in a Star's general condition might be ascertainable, but spotting objects in orbit of a planet would be a series of dots at best, and it might be expected for a planet like Vulcan.

Another touch I liked was the countdown to coming out of warp.

It makes far more sense that the ship would automatically come out of warp based partially on timing and calculations, considering the distances and precision needed for warp travel between star systems.

I guess combat at warp speed is a no-go in JJ's universe then. I suppose, if they can get readings on other ships in warp, then warp-to-warp might work; but certainly no firing at sublight ships while at warp speed. Can't see em', can't shoot em.

But they can transport to a ship at warp. Have a defense station with a load of bombs to beam on to the ships as they approach...

Not necessarily. If you are far enough from a target, or otherwise being pursued by a hostile ship, the potential exists to pop into warp drive for a short burst to get into a better firing position before your enemy can react. I used to do this to people playing Star Trek: Legacy all the time: you warp to a position way off on a tangent, then plot another warp to a spot directly behind your target so you wind up behind him before he can turn around on impulse power; nail him with a spread of photons and some phaser fire, then warp again before he can fight back.

Heh, I used to do something similar.

I think this creates an opportunity to make combat at warp distinctly different from sublight ship to ship. Not that I really expect to see that any time soon, but it's still a cool thought.

JJ doesn't give a flying fig about Star Trek science. He wanted Star Wars, he's even stated he prefer Star Wars.

Unfortunately (for us Trekkies) George Lucas' coronary arteries don't seem to be subjected to the same sort of fat build up as his gut and head. So JJ will just have to do "lightspeed" and a "parsec = unit of time" type nonsense in Trek instead.

Seeing and hearing exactly what you want to see and hear regardless of context and fact is the God given right of every cretin, but wishing heart disease on a person, any person, is darned fucking low. I might like to suggest you grow up somewhat.
