Warners Plans Wizard of Oz Remake

When I heard they were doing a new version I thought "so what? It's just another adaptation of a book, and there've been remakes before, like The Wiz.

But "shooting from the 1939 script" is a different matter. That script's *been* shot. Why not write a new one?

And I suppose it's going to be one of Zemeckis' CG-capture craptaculars like Polar Express, Beowulf, etc... And probably in ultra-cheesy "comin-at-ya" 3D.

Count me out.

I'd imagine that the Kansas sequences will be in 2D.

I'd actually prefer for this to be a CGI 3d film, rather than a live-action remake.

Dorothy - Chloe Moretz
Scarecrow - Robert Downey, Jr
Tin Man - Steve Carell
Cowardly Lion - Brad Garrett
Wicked Witch of the West - Sarah Palin
Glinda - Swoozie Kurtz or Kristin Chenowith
Auntie Em - Betty White
The Wizard - Alec Baldwin

I'd like to add Christopher Walken to the list for The Wizard.

Howsabout Christopher Walken as the Scarecrow and Robert Downey Jr. as the Wizard? :D

Before I saw this post, I was going to talk about how I was looking forward to re-adapting the book because, as much as I love the '39 version, it's not terribly loyal and I would love to see the book done properly. However, I overlooked the bit in the original post that stated Zemeckis is re-shooting the '39 script.

Count me in with all of the other haters. That and remaking Yellow Submarine. :scream:

Hmm. As I remember, the 1939 script gets a lot shorter after the house crashes into Oz. The visit to Munchkinland reduces to ten minutes, tops, I'd guess. The yellow brick road would be traversed in half the time. Then, the visit to the city of Oz dwindles to about three minutes before the audience with the wizard. I suspect a lot of us won't much care for the sketchy introductions of the characters either.

In other words, if the remake isn't a musical too, what the hell are they going to put on screen? Twenty minutes of CGI munchkins not singing and dancing?

If it is to be a musical, Justin Timberlake for Cowardly Lion, Harry Connick Jr. for the Scarecrow, Johnny Depp for the Tin Woodman, on the grounds they can sing, well enough anyhow, and act, well enough anyhow. Charles Durning for the Wizard, Melissa Leo for Auntie Em. Salma Hayek for Glinda and Michelle Rodriquez for the Wicked Witch. (And Lady Gaga for the flying monkey.)

Justin Bieber for Dorothy might work at that.:)

Seriously a musical remake hinges on Dorothy (who should actually be young, though not necessarily ten,) and on the songs. If they're not doing a musical remake, then there's too little script and the project is crazy.

I wish Zemeckis would get back to directing proper films. Who else is tired of his uncanny valley CGI suckfests?

Wasn't this debunked on Thursday (at least, the parts about Zemeckis directing and the script being the one from 1939)?

Yeah, it was.

^^ I don't see anything there actually refuting that it would be using the 1939 script. In fact, while it's the least interesting way to remake it that would probably be the most sensible way to do it. I would imagine that the typical mainstream moviegoer would expect that a new movie would be a remake of that one. Even if some liberties would be expected I'm sure they would think that would at least be the basis.

True, but since much of the griping in this thread has been about Zemeckis, it might be worth noting that he's not involved with the project and doesn't want to be.

I also find the rumors that it will be a remake of the 1939 script to be pretty hard to believe, unless they add a lot of new material (and, really, if you're going to do that, why not go back to the original children's book?).

Mr. Adventure is right in pointing out, however, that Warner Bros. hasn't denied the part about the script. Yet. That was my mistake in skimming the original article.
