Warners Plans Wizard of Oz Remake

yeah this is b/c of Burton's Alice's success. Lots of reimaginings/remakes of fairy tales with female protagonists aimed at the Twilight set coming down the pipeline. Its monkey see/monkey do in Hollywood as usual.

That, and Baum's original work is in the public domain. I'm sure the 1939 movie remains protected, though.
Who owns it these days? Could it be Warners? Didn't they wind up with a lot of MGM's properties when Turner and Warner merged?

I just hope it's in 3D. :p

Seriously though, a remake reusing the same script? That's what I don't get. I'm not surprised that there's a remake. I'm surprised that it isn't getting and updated telling of the story.

Like, using Muppets or something.

How about Michael Bay as director?

Dorothy knows exactly where she is because she's an undercover CIA operative sent to Oz to bring down a terrorist cell. The Wicked Witch of the West flies an Apache attack helicopter.

Whatever happened to making 'Wicked' into a movie? Wouldn't that be so much better and not stomp all over the old film the way this surely will?

Last I heard. Schwartz was in favor of the idea. But lets face it, for monetary concerns they won't even start to think about preproduction until the show starts winding down on Broadway. And they're still going strong today all over the globe. I know I love my German Cast CD. Willemijn Verkaik ist super toll. :D

Elzie - you sound like a very cool teenager. It's refreshing to hear of a younger person enjoying classic musicals. Can you please tell us what you thought of "Hairspray"?

I don't know why that would be a concern if they base the production on the books. Musicals are more or less different entities. The book was more or less a serious take on the world of Oz, even though it had many contradictions in it.

Dorothy - Chloe Moretz
Scarecrow - Robert Downey, Jr
Tin Man - Steve Carell
Cowardly Lion - Brad Garrett
Wicked Witch of the West - Sarah Palin
Glinda - Swoozie Kurtz or Kristin Chenowith
Auntie Em - Betty White
The Wizard - Alec Baldwin

Most people are unfamiliar with the Baum books, no "alternate reality" required. Del Rey made an effort to get them into print in mass-market paperbacks back in...I think the early eighties. My mom borrowed quite a few of the earlier, illustrated hardcovers from a neighbor and read them to us when I was about four or five; her reading to us is one of my favorite memories. Pooh, "Stewart Little," and Oz.

I just started reading The Wizard of Oz to my daughter tonight. :bolian:

The musical has more mass appeal and marketability. Lets face it, they aren't gunning for an Oscar with it. The goal of Hollywood is to make popular films and money. Dark and rather depressing (though very good) books are less appealing for that than popular musicals.

So I think it will go that way for sure.

I'd like to add Christopher Walken to the list for The Wizard.

Sounds good, I remember thinking they should re-do The Wiz-inator of Oz on the way home from seeing Alice on LSD. I also think it would be great if they stuck to the original script and shoot it entirely in 3-D.
