Warner Bros. making "Smallville" movie?

Ain'tItCool is reporting a rumor that Warner Bros. will be cancelling Smallville this year after nine seasons to produce a feature length theatrical film entitled Metropolis, slated for Christmas 2010. The film is expected to continue on from the show with the original cast in tact.

Of course, this is one big fat rumor at this point, however the report did say that WB is expected to make an announcement at this summer's Comic-Con coming in a few weeks.

Also, for what it is worth, Superman Returns co-scribe Mike Dougherty did reveal recently that WB does plan on announcing their next course of action with Superman at this year's Comic-Con, so as outlandish as this seems, there might be some validity to it.

We'll find out in a few weeks, I guess.

I am tempted to say something... But I promised myself I would no longer make predictions on this subject! ;)

But I won't be seeing it if somehow it were true.

Putting aside my hatred of the show for a second.... I really doubt it. Smallville isn't popular enough to be made into movies. It ratings for it's last season finale were near series lows. It may do okay on The CW but it was never as huge as the X-Files or TNG was.

The best way to do the next Superman movie is to reboot and not try to do a sequel to a show that so few people watch.

I won't see this anyway. The show should have ended years ago.

Makes you wonder why the show would be continuing to add new comic book villains to the show. Why cast Brian Austin Green as Metallo when they could save that character for a big name actor in a feature film?

I have a feeling this is just about a rebranding of the series itself.

They should've made Metropolis instead of Superman Returns. Back then, Smallville was perhaps more popular-though it still has a devoted fanbase now and is popular enough to make it to 9 seasons. I thought the idea of a Smallville/Metropolis movie made sense because it can be made relatively cheaply (esp. in comparison to SR), has a built in audience, and by making Clark Superman (esp. after Season 5), it would've brought in more fans who are interested in the Superman angle.

With a TV budget Smallville does a pretty good job with FX. Just imagine what they could do with a little bit more money. Even though I think the idea would've worked better before Superman Returns, I still would rather see Metropolis than SR2.

They can go nuts with a Smallville movie if they want but if they're doing one in lieu of a real Superman flick, I'll be pissed.

Don't get me wrong, Smallville's passable as entertainment, but I sure as hell wouldn't pay money to see it in any incarnation.

I love smallville and would see this, but it should prob be a straight to video release. They need to reboot supes on the big screen with a hulking 35 year old man who looks like Alex Ross painted him. No origin needed. Everyone knows it. Just 3 movies that are good, then go in a new direction again. Every generation needs their own version of supes and obviously Donner's has come and gone.

Right now, 35 year old nerds rule the box office so let's give them a superman they can call their own. One true to the comics.

Make a movie, sell a litte dvd, OR... Make a movie and sell 9 DVD box sets.

Considering, all the sets and costumes, they could make something major which looks good on the cheap.

I agree, they would be able to push the Smallville box sets along with the movie and later its DVD going this route.

And if they did do Metropolis, I'd wager they could get Michael Rosenbaum back for it as Lex Luthor and he'd actually shave his head for it again. That is instead of his currently stated precondition of wearing a bald skullcap due to his fatigue of shaving his head daily for seven years.

I would be all for it if that is the only way to get Tom Welling to give in and finally put on the suit and fly. Just as long as they leave the frakking insipid incarnation of Lana as played by Kristen Kreuk out of the project. Her involvement would be a deal breaker for me.

If this were true, then why would WB move Smallville to the Friday night death slot? Wouldn't they want it higher profile to build up interest?

What I think may be confused here is that WB may be planning a direct to DVD movie titled Metropolis. That kind of niche' marketing would make more sense.

unless this involves Suoerman, or alot more Red/Blue blur than the series offers, im not keen on the idea

Should have moved on to METROPOLIS the series about two or three seasons ago.

TemporalFlux is probably right. A direct to DVD "movie" would make far more sense, especially since the ratings are falling and it's becoming harder and harder to make money with the series on television.

I'm not sure what to say since this is only a rumor so far. They should have called the series Metropolis a long time ago, four or five seasons ago after everyone graduated from high school and the second meteor struck bringing Brainiac. Like another poster mentioned I would see "Metropolis" if it meant...the final conclusion of the series and the emergence of Superman.

I hope this is true. I'd love to see a Superman movie that takes off from Smallville. If it is a go, hopefully they can get Rosenbaum and McKean back.

They need to reboot supes on the big screen with a hulking 35 year old man who looks like Alex Ross painted him.
That sort of thing looks good on the printed page, or even in cartoons, but I'm not sure such a character would look right in a live-acton format.

IIRC Alex Ross's Superman is partially inspired by Chris Reeve from Superman The Movie so we've already seen him on screen.

They can go nuts with a Smallville movie if they want but if they're doing one in lieu of a real Superman flick, I'll be pissed.

Even if they don't do a Smallville movie, there's still no guarantee that we'd get another Superman movie. I've said it before & I'll say it again: making a Superman movie is HARD. If it was easy, there wouldn't have been a 19 year gap between Superman IV & Superman Returns.

I think that Brandon Routh & Bryan Singer deserve another shot. I loved Superman Returns. I think it's a beautiful movie, Singer's masterpiece, and probably more profitable than Warner Bros. will legally admit.

But if they instead want to do a Superman movie with Tom Welling & Michael Rosenbaum, I'd be interested. Just no Lana Lang, for gods' sake! Worst. TV character. Ever!

BTW, is there any truth to the rumor that Tom Welling refuses to wear the Superman tights because he thinks there's some curse attached to the role and that some terrible tragedy will befall him like it did George Reeves & Christopher Reeve?

I think the only way WB should even consider such a thing is if they first kill the embargo.

What embargo?
