Warner Bros. Circling David Ayer for DC Comics’ ‘Suicide Squad’

Was it not reported that Will Smith and David Ayer already signed on for a sequel?

Wait, what? Is this confirmed somewhere? Harley, Deadshot, and Joker I figured were more or less guaranteed to survive, but Croc? I figured him on the list for "likely to be killed off" so the movie would live up to its name. Not as much as El Diablo or Slipknot, but fairly likely.
Not confirmed, but can you see them killing off any Batman affiliated members of the SS? Not when you have cannon fodder like El Diablo and Slipknot on the team. Katana is an Outsider and Justice Leaguer, so she's safe too.

Oh, looking at the Wiki for this movie - apparently Katana's not actually part of the squad but Flagg's bodyguard. That clears up a question I had, then.

Oh, that would explain her presence. Interesting -- the "bodyguard" angle was basically Tatsu/Katana's gig in the Beware the Batman animated series. When the show's Earth One-style ex-spy/bodyguard/butler Alfred was injured, he brought in his protegee Tatsu to take over as Bruce's bodyguard, and she eventually became Batman's partner. I don't know if she's ever been a bodyguard in the comics.

I could maybe see Enchantress surviving if they have something planed for the magical side of the DCU, but with so many other magical characters like Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, Etrigan, and Constantine, I don't know if that would necessarily be enough to keep her safe.

There are things in the trailers suggesting that Enchantress may actually be the villain of the movie (for instance, her absence from many scenes of the team, and the creepy transformation she seems to undergo at one point).

I haven't been reading the new SS in the comics, but based on the cover following Rebirth it seems like the team is highly inspired by the movie line up.

Regarding survivability of characters, I think Boomerang will probably die, just because of the opportunity to off a character in a really Mad Max kind of way, i.e. spectacular and played for laughs.

If Will Smith gets to make a series of Deadshot movies, that would be pretty cool. Apart from the inevitable jokes about "Emo Deadpool".... ;)

I haven't read it, but the writers of the current Harley series also have a team-up series, Harley's Little Black Book, and the first issue had Wonder Woman as the character she teamed up with.
Did not know that! I guess there are few really original ideas lying around. If it's good, I hope it's influential.

Am I the only one who thinks that even though the team is called Suicide Squad, the team death kill count probably won't be that high?

Slipknot.

Katana as a bodyguard is unexpected to me. In the Ostrander Suicide Squad book, the team was made up of villains and c-list heros who were either broken in some way, repentant for something or needed the squads help for a future mission and paid for that help by serving on the squad.

I think making her simply a bodyguard removes a more fun reason for her being there that could be developed in future installments.

Given her comic book history in the Outsiders it would be fun if it were revealed she's Batman's spy on Waller's team. Let's say Batman wasn't to keen on the idea of releasing criminals he put away and sent Katana to keep an eye on them in the guise of a bodyguard.

That's a really intriguing idea. I would absolutely LOVE it if Affleck's Batman project is actually the Outsiders instead of a solo film.

I was going just by the list on Wikipedia which has her as a member of the Squad, and I forgot about the trailer. This actually brings up a point I've found kind of confusing. A lot of the promotional stuff seemed to treat her as a member of the team, but the trailers seem to be showing her as the villain. I think the character has been both good and bad in the comics, so I'm wonder if perhaps she starts as one of the villains (with Joker), but ends up switching sides by the end of the movie.

What I was thinking is that she starts out as part of the team and then goes bad. After all, this is a team of supervillains. It wouldn't be that shocking if one of their own went rogue.

This is where I think the story is going:

An interpretation of the Enchantress in post Cisis is that she was posessed by an entity called the Succubus from the Nightshade dimension. This posession made her somewhat erratic and she was sometimes good, other times evil. She also had a brother called the Incubus, who was full time evil. The nightshade dimension was a shadow land, which can explain the black tentcalced monster and the shadowy figures getting heads cut off.

I think the squad is trying to take out the Incubus at the urging of Enchantress. I haven't seen enough of the character in the frailers to guess if she's good or evil.

Thanks for the images! A couple of questions: what are those lines on Joker's face supposed to be, and do we know what the letters on Harley's wristbands spell?

Also, the pic of Joker with the executive toy gives an intriguing hint at the plot.

The ones that aren't tattoos look like scars, probably Batman-inflicted.

and do we know what the letters on Harley's wristbands spell?

Looks to me like "YES" on the right wrist and "SIR" on the left. And the choker around her neck seems to say "PUDDIN". So it looks like they're taking her submissive, emotionally dependent relationship with an abusive psychopath and making it into a gaudy fashion statement. I hope there's more to that than there appears.

The toy is called a Newton's cradle.

They are placed like scars, but look like drawn lines.

Interesting from the Teaser cover you can see Joker's hair colour is definitely a dye job (or some other kind of application; I'm not an expert on hair things). Put alongside Leto's comments about Joker being a kind of shamanic character, it seems this version of J has put on his look for the same reasons Bruce Wayne dresses like a bat, i.e. to be seen as a reality-disrupting archetype rather than a person.

Thanks for that!
