Warner Bros. Circling David Ayer for DC Comics’ ‘Suicide Squad’

Needs more Batman.
I'm actually still good on Batman from the excellent and wholly satisfying Nolan trilogy. Batman v. Superman looks so unappealing to me from the clips I've seen (not to mention that I didn't care for Man Of Steel in the slightest) that I haven't even gone to see it. Is this Suicide Squad movie going to be part of that continuity?

Yes. The DC movies starting with MOS are all connected.

Not either. I never put forth opinions that aren't genuine for the sake of stirring up trouble. No one said you had to agree with me.

Well, that diminishes my interest in this slightly, although hopefully it'll be designed to work as a standalone as well. Seems like it's the sort of thing that would be. I think I'll check it out, in any case.

It is standalone. The major members or rather the members of the Suicide Squad we know will be surviving the movie, are Batman villains. Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Joker and Killer Croc. Batman and Waller had a testy relationship back in the day. Idk if they'll be exploring that now, but we do know Affleck in and out of costume will be in the movie.

Ah, I see. Yes, I knew they were Batman villains in the comics but I didn't know this was connected to the Justice League film sequence or that Affleck was in it, having only seen the trailer. I guess I thought in error that maybe this project was designed to mop up the "rejects" that weren't going to be used in those. Clearly, that's what I get for not reading through all 26 pages of the thread that came before I posted in it! But no, although I realize now that I was posting from ignorance, it truly wasn't meant as a troll.

Thinking about a possible Harley Quinn movie, I'd say the talk is only speculative at this stage. She'd be hard to write a feature for, as she's really a reactive character rather than a protagonist.

The original version, perhaps, but Harley's been a lead character in her own self-titled comics at least twice over the past 15 years, and in her current solo series, she's become a much more independent character with her own life apart from the Joker or Batman. I gather that book's been pretty successful (it's from Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, whose previous work with Power Girl was acclaimed for the way it revitalized that character), and I'd imagine the movie would follow its template somewhat.

When they mentioned "team-up", my first thought, simply from what we know of the DCMU, was Harley & Wonder Woman. Unlikely, I know, but they could be a great "odd couple".

That's interesting -- I think the same idea occurred to me the other day, possibly in a dream.

Conner and Palmiotti actually did a Harley Quinn and Power Girl miniseries last year.

She's also got her own gang now, the Gang of Harleys, so it's not out of the realm of possibility for the character to be a team leader.

I haven't read it, but the writers of the current Harley series also have a team-up series, Harley's Little Black Book, and the first issue had Wonder Woman as the character she teamed up with.

Wait, what? Is this confirmed somewhere? Harley, Deadshot, and Joker I figured were more or less guaranteed to survive, but Croc? I figured him on the list for "likely to be killed off" so the movie would live up to its name. Not as much as El Diablo or Slipknot, but fairly likely.

No way would they tell us in advance who's surviving the movie. I assume M.A.C.O. just means we "know" in the sense that it stands to reason that they wouldn't kill off such major characters. Although I agree that Croc isn't necessarily a guaranteed survivor.

I don't think I'd put Croc at quite the same level as the three Kestrel mention, so I wouldn't say he's safe. The only reason Deadshot is possibly safe would probably be more due to the fact that he's played by the biggest name in the cast, rather than the character being really popular.

To be fair, Deadshot is synonymous with the Suicide Squad. He could be played by anyone and would probably be safe, especially if they're planning a sequel.

I see what you mean, I just looked through the lists of members on Wikipedia and he's been on every version of the team except the one it calls "Interim Suicide Squads (2008 - 2011)". I didn't realize he was that strongly connected to the group, that would probably make him safe then.

Yeah... I haven't read it myself, but I've heard that it was John Ostrander and Kim Yale's run on Suicide Squad that essentially defined most of Deadshot's characterization as it's now known. Before that, he wasn't all that major or complex a character (he'd originally been just a one-time Batman villain from the '40s or '50s until Steve Engelhart and Marshall Rogers brought him back with a new costume and attitude in their brief but classic '70s run), but SS made him its central player and added a great deal of depth to him.

Between Will Smith and Deadshot being such a long-last SS character, I think he's safe yeah. Joker and Harley go without saying. Croc is a step down from those imo, and maybe even from Katana and Boomerang who I think are also safe. But good point there's no way they'd actually announce who makes it and who doesn't.

For me, there's two I'm certain will live (Harley and Deadshot), two I'm certain will die (Slipknot and El Diablo) and the other four are kind of uncertain, but I'd put it Katana, Boomerang, Enchantress, Croc in order of likelihood to survive.

I dunno about Katana... I'd certainly like to think she's safe, but the cynic in me expects the nonwhite cast members other than Will Smith and Viola Davis to be the most likely casualties.

Ayers is a good writer, and he's a decent director, but I think WB is missing an opportunity to hire him as director for Affleck's Batman franchise. The man has developed his own science for crime dramas.

Well, both of the ones I'm sure are dead meat aren't white, true. And I guess it's almost guaranteed that Rick Flagg will survive.

Oh, looking at the Wiki for this movie - apparently Katana's not actually part of the squad but Flagg's bodyguard. That clears up a question I had, then.

Thanks for posting that, I was wondering about her being with/on a team of villains, when she isn't usually a villain.

That lines up pretty closely with my expectations too. I could maybe see Enchantress surviving if they have something planed for the magical side of the DCU, but with so many other magical characters like Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, Etrigan, and Constantine, I don't know if that would necessarily be enough to keep her safe.
