Warhammer 40,000

Never did the tabletop game or read the books. I loved Dawn of War though, and I own both DoW games and all their expansion packs. Great stuff...

i tried reading a novel once and couldn't get into it.

i own several codex books from the previous version. i mostly bought them for the background story stuff.

i've never played the tabletop games, but i played demos for DoW and both expansions and nothing more because i can't stand RTS games any more.

Well, I care nothing for the games or the books, but as a model-builder I thought some of the vehicles were cool. I've built a few just for fun.

Owned and played "Space Crusade", a dumbed down board game for the masses as a kid but didn't really get into the universe until Dawn of War came out. Loved that and when I came across some of the novel I ended up picking up the Eisenhorn trilogy. Thoroughly enjoyed those books and they got me interested in the universe generally. I've bought more novels and have about 8 and I own all the DoW games. I'd like to get more of the novels but I rarely go by a Games Workshop and my Borders only has a very limited (and over priced) collection or mostly Warhammer rather than 40K.

I have thought about getting into the miniatures but I'm not all that interested in actively competing, rather it would be simply to build an army and have it purely for display. However, all that painting looks a chore so I can't bring myself to take that next step.

Knew someone who was into it. The models were neat, but I detest dice rolling wargame bullshit.

Bought the pc game Final Liberation and played it (when it didn't crash). It was fun, but as it was a failure, no expansions were made.

That's about it.

I find the space versions of orcs and elves to be a bit, well...stupid and uninspired, but from what I've read the universe has evolved a bit more, though it still amounts to great galactic powers trying to genocide each other. It being a wargame universe and all.

Like the Dawn of War games. Starting to try the books as of a week ago, but while I like the Horus Heresy books so far (read the first two), I'm struggling to figure out where to go in the "mainline" after I read the DOW novelizations.

There isnt really any one series of books to read, it boils down to what you enjoyed. Anything by Dan Abnett is worth a read, and if you managed to get through the DOW novelisations, then i recommend James Swallows Blood Angel books as an example of a good Space Marine book.

A good idea would be to pick up one of the short story collections, like Planetkiller. That way you can sample the writing styles of most of the current Black Library authors and see which appeals to you and then go from there.

Im a big fan of 40k and Warhammer, having played the games for the last 14 years.
