Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to start?

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

My vote would be The Corbomite Manuever, as the first regular production episode it's always felt a little more introductory than some of the others.

But it's not really a woman's episode. Most of this one is pure dude stuff.

WTF? I'm a woman, and I LOVE "The Corbomite Maneuver." "Not chess, Mr. Spock -- POKER!" Kirk at his very Kirkiest. :)

Three billion people aren't all alike, you know. Star Trek should have taught you that. ;)

I'd recommend showing her all of the episodes, in production order. The creators of TOS were making things up as they went along, inventing backstory at a breakneck pace, and it's not until the middle of the first season that they solidify such things as who sent this ship out there and what constraints they're under. Neither the Federation nor Starfleet Command nor the Prime Directive had been created when TOS began, and no one — not even Leonard Nimoy — knew exactly who Spock was or what a Vulcan should look like or act like.

So if you watch in production order, you can hear them refer to the Enterprise as an "Earth" ship early on, you can see Kirk seemingly break the Prime Directive (because Gene Coon hadn't thought it up yet), you can see pink blusher on Spock's cheeks, because no one had yet realized that a man with green blood wouldn't blush pink, and you can see Spock smirk and pout.

To me, watching it all take shape as they create the backstory for the ship and her world is an endearing part of watching TOS, and you can best see the story behind the scenes of the story on the screen by watching in production order, not order of airing.

I recently forced my husband to watch all 79 episodes with me. (It took him two years; he dragged his feet a bit.) He'd seen some of them as a kid, but he was never all that into it, whereas I'd been totally in love with Star Trek from the first time I saw it, at the age of 11. My husband liked TOS well enough, but he doesn't really get why I adore it. Maybe you have to see it at 11, before the critical faculties are fully developed, to have that total adoration, I dunno.

If you just want additions to your list, though, I'd add "The Naked Time" to your Season 1 list, since it gives us such insight into both Kirk and Spock, and I'd add "The Devil in the Dark," since it's one of the best TOS episodes. For Season 2, I'd add "Journey to Babel," partly because it's one of the best episodes and partly because it gives us so much insight into Kirk's and Spock's characters. I'd also add "The Deadly Years," because it shows us just how important Kirk is and just how loyal Spock is (love that scene where he tries to get out of the competency hearing four times before finally giving in). And I'd add "The Empath" to your Season 3 list, since watching the three guys each try to sacrifice themselves for the others is the kind of thing that appeals to non-SF fans.

I think that's true for a lot of people. And it would explain why so many people are crazy about vintage Doctor Who, while I, never having seen it as a kid, can't get into it. Which is not to say that Doctor Who is as good as Star Trek, because objectively I'm still sure it is not.

Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to start?
None of the responses in this thread are zen enough.

I would start on the couch. Really. And while any episode is on, I would look at her and pay attention to her instead of the episode. Say things like, "That must have been so tough - how did you get through it?" or "What an amazing experience - I'll bet you were so excited!" and "I'm really happy you've found success in your work - I enjoy hearing about it." And repeat episode viewings like that often enough but not too often. Next thing you know, she's wanting to watch Star Trek with you every night.

But I'll answer the literal question from my experience: One of my favorite girlfriends did like Star Trek, or at least she humored me by saying so. Her favorite episode was "The Paradise Syndrome," where a planet's inhabitants were patterned after Native Americans. Although it was one of the lesser episodes for me - I like ship/techy shows - I understood perfectly how that would be her favorite. She was a romantic. It was full of romance with a couple deeply in love, happy, and devoted to each other. It's the sort of show to cuddle to. I'd watch it anytime with her. But I had to go to college...

"Hi honey, tonight we are going to learn about miscarrages in space."

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

Through conversation my girlfriend has made it known to me that she wouldn't mind trying trek out, but due to the fact that she has little no interest in science-fiction otherwise I have been hesitant to show her an episode, lest it give her a poor first impression.
There's something for EVERYONE in TOS, it depends upon their tastes.

My wife has a thing for mild horror. Her favorite episode is "Wolf in the Fold".

My old manager liked episodes and movies that showed a command structure. His favorite episode was "The Corbomite Maneuver".

If someone is a Star Wars fan, the two most likely episodes might be "The Doomsday Machine" or perhaps "Balance of Terror".

If someone likes WWII suspense or submarine movies, "Balance of Terror".

If someone likes comedy, try "A Piece of the Action" or "The Trouble with Tribbles". Tribbles seems to be appreciated by people across the board.

If someone loves drama or tragic, star-crossed lovers stories, show them "The City on the Edge of Forever". Of course, that also works if they are a Harlan Ellison fan.

Enjoy westerns? Show them "Where No Man Has Gone Before". It comes complete with a western-style showdown at the end.

Like spy stories? Show them "The Enterprise Incident".

Like star-spangled patriotic showings? "The Omega Glory"!

Like 1950's campy science fiction? "Spock's Brain"!

1950's to 1960's talk-a-computer-to-death kind of shows? "Return of the Archons" or "The Changeling" or "The Ultimate Computer"!

Like fish out of water stories? "Friday's Child"!

Like one-on-one battles? "Arena" or "The Squire of Gothos"!

Perhaps the easiest way to answer the initial questions would be: What does your girlfriend like to watch that ISN'T Star Trek and then find something close.

I like this advice.

I just watched Journey to Babel. That is a very good episode that provides a good introduction to a lot of Trek standbys. You could do a lot worse than to introduce someone to Trek via Journey to Babel.

Rats! I should have included Journey to Babel. It's good for anyone who likes a medical show like Grey's Anatomy for the Spock/Sarek tranfusion/operation aspect.

Husband/wife drama "Why didn't you tell me?" "There was nothing you could have done."

And of course family drama:

"Oh, go to him NOW ... PLEASE!"
"I cannot."

One on one action with Kirk fighting Thelev (and Kirk gets beaten up pretty well ... although almist a pyrrhic victory).

Space battles with the Klingon ship.

Man, this one episode is a smorgasbord!

Quite true, and excellent advice.

I'd add that "Journey to Babel" is a mystery -- Who killed the Tellarite ambassador?

No doubt Thelev, the Orion spy.

Yes, of course. I didn't mean that it was a mystery at the END of the episode. The mystery is solved in the course of the episode, just as mysteries usually are.

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

^ Oh, I see what you mean. Yes, it's also a mystery. :bolian:

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

It really depends on whether she's into drama, romance, suspense, comedy or action. My selection based on that answer:

Drama: "Conscience of The King" or "Amok Time"
Romance: "City On The Edge of Forever" or "Metamorphosis"
Suspense: "Balance Of Terror" or "Space Seed"
Comedy: "The Trouble With Tribbles" or "A Piece Of The Action"
Action: "The Doomsday Machine" or "Mirror, Mirror"

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

Another question: How allergic (or open) is she to less than modern special effects?

"The Devil in the Dark" is a fantastic episode and a wonderful first choice--unless you think she can't get past the big foam-rubber monster, which could conceivably appear laughable to younger viewers used to more sophisticated SFX.

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

My picks:

  • Comedy -- The Naked Time, Tomorrow is Yesterday, The Trouble with Tribbles

  • Drama -- Charlie X, The Corbomite Maneuver, Balance of Terror, The Doomsday Machine, The Immunity Syndrome, Assignment: Earth, The Enterprise Incident, The Paradise Syndrome, Day of the Dove, The Tholian Web, Requiem for Methuselah, All Our Yesterdays
(Caveat: I'd choose characterization over special effects any day of the week.)

Trouble With Tribbles. Chicks love that. Humans love that.

Fixed that for you.

I can't believe I forgot The Trouble with Tribbles. That is my second favorite episode of TOS after The City On The Edge Of Forever.

If I were to introduce someone to Star Trek through TOS, The Trouble With Tribbles would be the way to do it, following up with the DS9 episode Trials and Tribble-ations.

I just rewatched Trials and Tribble-ations for the first time since it aired. That is a fun episode.

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

I'm a little late, but definitely try "The Devil In The Dark". That's what got me hooked! :-)

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

My husband started me out on City On The Edge Of Tomorrow, and I loved it. It helps that I think Shatner is cute, though, and I was already a bit of a sci-fi-ish person, but not too intensely into anything sci-fi as I am into Trek now.

Show her one of your favourites; it will likely speak for itself!

Re: Want to introduce my girlfriend to Trek through TOS, where to star

I should try this with my wife but I would start where I started:

Balance of Terror-love the submarine feel.

Corbomite Maneuver-a bit of a plot twist, for fun.

Trouble with Tribbles-for more fun :)
