So what's the story here? I know there were some problems between the two women but I always thought they had been blown out of proportion somewhat.

My understanding is that Mulgrew was not happy with the highly sexualised nature of the Seven character and felt it was a step in the wrong direction and she (mistakenly) took this out on Ryan.

Ryan was a victim of misdirected anger. Mulgrew was apparently close to Lien and was upset that she was fired. Janeway thought Voyager might be a way forward for women and then Ryan shows up in the catsuit.

It happens and we have all done it or been the target of such attitudes in some degree or another. Most people eventually recognize it for what it is. From what I understand the two women have since made peace.

Was it because Mulgrew didn't like the sexiness of the Seven character though or was it because she didn't like the sexiness of Jeri Ryan?

There seems to be some confusion over that aspect.

Taking it out on Ryan would suggest the latter.

No, she loved getting a raise ;) She loved the idea, she will say so outright. but... What she was upset about was the over promotion of Ryan, putting Mulgrew in a ancillary spotlight. (yes petty but understandable) Also, without giving it much thought as to why she was also agitated by Ryan's tardiness and muddying the lines dating a producer. Kate is a bit um, hard line on professionalism. She was the CAPTAIN. She in her mind sacrificed to be very professional and set the tone. So when Jeri got all the interviews and got away with tardiness and producer sex, it made her wonder what was the point of her being there to shape women.

And make up would take forever on an already beautiful woman. Jeri shed light on that in an interview that Kate would get testy when make up on Jeri took too long between shots.

I wish I had citations but some of it was just her talking with me in Portland. So you can take my word for it or not :P

Was Ryan dating the producer when she was hired? I thought she had been on the show for a while before that started.

That came later. :D That I know.

I believe she was still married. Her divorce went public due to it's nature. *cough* scandal.

It was a perfect storm of things. Mulgrew placed great importance on the show being a trailblazer for strong female characters. On a different track she also had strong bond with Lien as did the rest of the cast. And then Jeri in her revealing outfit came along at a time of difficult ratings and Mulgrew did a quadruple facepalm.

It was a heavy enough conflict mind you. Apparently she was visibly stand-offish and unpleasant whilst shooting scenes and this caused Ryan alot of distress. It's good to see that all that bad blood is gone and they now get on well.

I like that the cast seems to have repaired old wounds over the years. They really do come across as really likable (At least Wang, Mulgrew, Picardo, and Ryan) and this was a nice story.
