News Wang and McNeill: Voyager Disappointments And Hopes

Sad but true. The powers that be wanted to force Harry's character into an archetype, even though it stopped really making sense around about the third season. And they thought we were either so forgiving or so unbelievably STUPID, we'd just ignore it.

Of all the complaints I might have, I dunno if not being able to do impersonations is one of them. Maybe he's THAT good? Too bad, would have liked to see Harry throw some sass at the senior staff.

That talent show idea sounds awful. Besides they already had him play the clarinet, which was bad enough.
In general I do not see "does impersonations" as an engaging character trait that would have somehow gotten me interested in the Kimster's character.
Wang also seems weirdly bitter about that awful episode where the Doctor took over Seven's body.

Sometimes it is the female of the species who initiates mating...
It's funny, I just recently rewatched "Threshold" for the first time in a couple decades on H&I, and much like "Spock's Brain" on TOS, it's a pretty good episode in the first half. It's just the ending where it goes completely off the rails.

The writers should have had more taste and imagination and made both Tom and Harry Iron Maiden fans!
I mean, Tom was supposed to be a fan of 20th century lifestyle. Not to mention that there is too little rock music in Star Trek.

Maybe Tom, but Harry is defintely the guy who still listened to Milli Vanilli after they were exposed as frauds.

I always think it's strangly ironic that when the actual singer revealed himself, he never worked again, despite his very real talent. Talk about killing the goose that laid the golden eggs...

Looking at what they ultimately did (or didn't) do with Kim, I can totally understand Wang being peeved over being sidelined in the show that's supposed to be an ensemble, especially when all he'd have to do is look across the studio lot and see how DS9 utilized its main cast AND secondary cast. There was no reason to not try to make something out of his character beyond "the green ensign".

So you are saying if there had been an episode where they had allowed Wang a few scenes where he does impressions at a silly talent show he would suddenly have become a complex character?

Piffle. They're too mainstream. Tom and Harry (who are missing their other namesake since they're not any old Tom, ___ or Harry) should have been Devo fans:

Yeah, so since Wang gave the example of the talent show in the interview, I'm assuming that was his best idea, which was pretty bad. Personally I think focusing on Janeway, Seven, and the Doctor was the right move.

No, I just understand that him throwing out an example like doing a talent show means that he was practically desperate to have ANYTHING done with his character. If the writers had given him a storyline comparable to a character like Nog, I don't think Wang would look back and say he wished he did a silly talent show episode.
