Waiting for the Boiler Man in freezing limbo

"The Boiler Man Cometh" any time between 12 and 5pm said the nice man on the phone. Aarggh
So I sit here waiting impatiently, freezing my backside off as I want to leave heating off for The Man to get the full grinding effect when said boiler is fired up. I rent so I am hoping to get a new one.
Why is waiting so annoying? And what do you do in the meantime?
I know - put boring threads on Trek BBS So someone please send me a task...

Hi Zee Yes but it's s'pose to hail and sleet tomorrow and we were planning a trip to London, us wimpy southerners don't do trips 'up to Town' in bad weather brrrr

But it's my airing cupboard as well. Would he not be a bit suspicious that all my clothes were hidden under the cushions on my sofa? And the beds have 3 layers of spare bedding on them? It's a 'compact and bijou' flat, there's no hiding. An hour to go now and I'm pacing and have drunk all my bf's beer out of boredom, well not all (hic!)

No it's a combination dubree and it's now officially 5pm so the Boiler Man did not Cometh . The heating does work it just grinds in a fearful manner. Well, expect another thread of boredom tomorrow.

Ok explain "grinds" where exactly is the noise coming from?

Yep, or if it's got a "forced draft" burner or "powered exhaust" it's coming from the fans.

If its a fan making the most times it's a sheetmetal issue that can be fixed with a bit of masking tape to dampen the noise. The rest of the situations involve taking the fan apart so we won't worry about those.

The pump housing might be loose from its mount, again that can be fixed with basic tools and/or tape. If it's not loose and the noise is coming from INSIDE the pump, well then I'll have to make a trip out there to diagnose it.

Hell if I left right now I'm sure I could arrive quicker than the repairman.

In January it was a 'stuck fan', in February it was a 'stuck flow-switch'. This time it's making the whirring and clicking sound of the fan but also the pilot light is permanately on 'fire-up' mode even when heating or water not on (would this be your 'forced draught burner'?) and not it's usual 'happy just burning away slightly' stage thus using loads more gas. If I turn off the electric which makes it whirr it calms down I shall optimistically expect smiley Man that Can in the morn - Which airport am I picking you up from Plec?
