Oliver Stone's slightly comedic take on the life of George "Dubya" Bush opens on October 17th. When I first heard about the movie a while back, I didn't think too much about it because I wasn't expecting much, but after seeing the trailers and TV spots, I was fairly impressed, especially with Josh Brolin as George W. Bush. At times he looks exactly like the Bush. He even has the mannerisms and voice down pat. Check out these links if you haven't already...

Looks great.

Brolin is fantastic and Dreyfus as Cheney has be in stitches. Should be very entertaining and, as I understand it, it's a pretty even-handed take on Bush.

We'll see.

But it's one I'll go see.

I'd love to see Stone do a movie on another great Preisdent named George.

Washington.

Hell, he should just do movies on ALL of the Presidents!

Trekker, William Harry Henderson's movie will probably be pretty short.

I heard an interview with Josh Brolin on NPR's Fresh Air earlier this week, and I have to admit my curiosity has been piqued. After suffering through Nixon (not in theaters, thankfully), I was tempted to pass on W. until we got it on DVD at the library, but I might just spend the money.

I'm interested in this. Stone said that it's more of a tragic father/son story than a just a slam on Bush (no pun intended).

Oliver Stone reduces historical leaders down to mommy and daddy issues See Nixon and Alexander, or, actually, don't. ;)

Even the goddamned Vietnam War was made out to be Charlie Sheen and his two father figures, Sgt. Barnes and Sgt. Norman Osborne...er...Elias.

I thought Nixon was great, but I'm torn on this. Slate's review of the shooting script was not very praiseworthy...and they're about as far left from someone looking to torpedo this because they're pro-Bush as you can get.

Still, I might go, if others are interested. I wonder what the reviews are saying...

Looks interesting, but I'm a little reluctant after the historical disservice Stone perpetrated with JFK.

I would like to see this one.

I've always liked Oliver Stone. JFK and Platoon are classics, and some of his other films are worth watching. Even when I dislike the movie, I check out the DVD just to listen to his thoughts in the commentary. His commentaries have good anecdotes, but are also very emotional sometimes. In his Platoon Commentary, he shares some of his real life Vietnam experience. During the village scene, he breathes strangely and keeps eerily quiet. He also admits in an ashamed voice that the scene where Sheen shoots at the one legged guy was based on his own actions. Strrangest of all, he claims to have actually taken part in a battle similar to the one at the end of the film, but has never found any reports about it.

that was a detour sorry. back to W.
I'm not a Bush fan, but he is a very interesting figure and worthy of our study and consideration. It will please me greatly if this is a balanced account of the president. for all the trouble he's caused, Bush is a guy with a great personal story and a forceful Idealism.

I'm interested in Brolin's performance. He's an excellent actor, and I'm getting the sense that whole not a flattering portrait, he's portrayed a little more emphatically then you might think, its not a "bush is evil" portrait, but more of a "he fought his way up then got duped by the people around him" type thing. Brolin's quite charismatic in the clip of him meeting Laura

Slate's review of the shooting script was not very praiseworthy...

A review of a SCRIPT? To judge a FILM unseen?

Unbelievable.

--Ted

To judge the film, no. To judge the historical accuracy of the film's written blue-print? Yes.

EDIT: Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes both show reviews being decisively split (RT tipping far higher and MC tipping far lower). I wonder what Dana Stevens will say? Ebert? Edelstein?
