Vulcans & Premarital (Pre-Ponn Far?) Sex

Okay, if you don't think children should be aboard Starfleet vessels, how do you feel about modern children riding in cars?
There is a big difference from riding in a car and living 24/7 on a starship. We spent short amounts of time in cars, not live in them.

I have no trouble with children on Starfleet ships, although it would be reckless not to consider that a starship specifically tasked with exploring the unknown might be more likely to run into unexpected threats that can't be anticipated.

The vast majority of the time (which we for the most part don't see) starships are under no threat, are engaged in peaceful activities and/or are boringly cruising between destinations.

I think it's conceivable that, despite Fontana's assertion, that most Vulcans don't mate as a matter of course outside the cycle.

But pairings of Vulcans and non-Vulcans (or perhaps two Vulcans not bonded with one another, since Voyager and Enterprise established female Pon Farr) is different. If a romantic partner requires or even wishes for private intimacy, then an "emotionless" Vulcan would have no qualms with providing this. It's the most logical thing to do.
Fontana set up the concept, why would you as a fan decide you know more than the creator of a fictional race mating habits? We don't know what most Vulcans would do, since we never saw most Vulcans in the franchise.

Death of the author? Head canon? All we know about Vulcans is what they showed us onscreen, and even that is often contradictory and prone to reinterpretation.

I don't presume to know more than D.C. Fontana, but with all due respect, I don't think she knows more than me or any other devoted fan who has watched her programming these past fifty years.

I'm not in a position to overwrite canon, only call 'em as I see 'em to the annoyance or agreement of a half-dozen people on a message board post that will soon be drowned out to oblivion.

I just rewatched "the Cloud Minder". In it Spock explains that every 7 years vulcans have an uncontrollable urge to mate, but that they don't need to wait for 7 years. They can do it sooner under "very exceptional circumstances", is what I think he said, but that was the gist of it.

"In the presence of extreme beauty" or something like that.

So, only when you find somebody really hot? :)

I prefer to think that Spock was trying out some Kirk-type flirtation as an experiment. Vulcans may like beauty, but they also like intelligence, and Droxine is a dimwit.

I prefer to think that Vulcans usually have sex only once in seven years. Yes, it seems unbelievable to us constantly horny humans, and that is good. Vulcans are aliens, they can be weird.

There is a romance between a human male and a Vulcan female in the Jean Lorrah novel The Vulcan Academy Murders.

I enjoyed that novel for the most part, especially how they handled the romance.
