Rain and Tom had much more chemistry and it was based on them both being themselves. With B'Elanna, it always felt like... "Tom needs to change and grow up and be different for this relationship to work."

As someone who's had those kinds of girlfriends, that bothered me. Firstly, because why should he and secondly, because it made B'Elanna less likeable.

They turned her into the nagging wife (much like they did with Keiko). The idea that men have all their fun stopped by a sensible, grown-up woman who demands responsibility and commitment, is not very enlightened writing.

That's interesting. I always saw this the other way around. Tom was this fun loving guy and Torres needed to lighten up and stop being angry and volatile....in other words...grow up. She was always yelling and flying off the handle about something. How many endless episodes did we have to endure with her dealing with some internal issue? (as I have said on here ad nauseum I liked the character. Not a fan of most of her episodes).

I suppose an argument could be make that they both had to grow up. From what we know neither one of them had much of a childhood or was 'properly' parented.

Having said that I did think Paris and Rain had chemistry. I also think he had chemistry with Kes. Just different kinds of chemistry than he had with B'Elanna.

You're a bizarre little egg Drone, but I kinda like you.

I know it must seem that we are often speaking in different languages as well as at cross purposes, but you're meaning here is quite clear and very much appreciated. May our dialogues henceforth proceed fruitfully!!!!:techman:

He is the egg drone. We are the egg drones. I am the walrus, goo goo ka joob.

As for Rain and Tom: They were too much alike. Tom and B'Elanna are different enough to make their relationship work. She's a tough Klingon engineer, he's a happy-go-lucky helmsman. That's why they have chemistry. Opposites attract.

^ Perhaps, but for longterm relationship success, "Birds of a feather" holds true more reliably (according to psychology).

Relationships on TV are doomed to conflict.

However, we never got a chance to see Rain past the crush stage. B'Elanna, we saw in all her highs and lows. And then there would be the matter of centuries of difference between them. Would Tom appreciate Rain's 20th century cynicism or earthbound perspective on things? A couple of shared interests is one thing; a marriage is another.

Ozzie and Harriet?

If Rain had been aboard long enough, was open to learning about Earth's history at home and in space, was committed to working to elevate her skills and knowledge so that she could make a meaningful contribution to the voyage, and saw in close perspective, the values of the crew and how they interacted not only towards one another, but how this society's precepts are played out in contacts with alien cultures, I think she could have evolved into a personality of many facets, who could fit in quite nicely on Voyager and as a continuing presence in Tom's life.

No one's saying that Tom and Rain had to get married and live happily ever after. It's not about which pairing would have led to the most stable long-term relationship; it's about which one would make the best television. Personally, I thought Tom and Rain were more a lot more fun to watch that Tom and B'Elanna ever were.

And just having Rain aboard the ship might have perked things up at times . . . especially if she didn't immediately evolve into a well-behaved Starfleet crew member. You'd want her to bring a different perspective to things, just to add another flavor to the mix.
