Viral Marketing?

Lapis Exilis

Since there's a nice long wait to go before the movie comes out, does anyone know if Paramount plans any viral marketing campaigns? It seems an obvious way to go, given the success of such things in the past, plus Star Trek already has a reputation for its fans "living in the story". There's also opportunities to tie it into real space exploration which would light up all us space nerds - they could do something in conjunction with NASA (which is always looking to up its PR profile) with the International Space Station, we just had a shuttle launch headed up there yesterday or the day before, right? Something with SETI, or the various discoveries going on about planetary discoveries.

Or am I just geeking out here?

Everytime I hear of Hollywood promoting something virally...

I can't help thinking I'm going to get gastroenteritis.

Ah, so no one here actually really likes what they have seen so far of the new movie?
Well, not for nothing, I think it's obnoxious that the likes/dislikes of the new ship are about 50/50 on these and other trek related boards. That just doesn't make sense. You want unbiased opinions, go to modeling sites that actually objectively look at the ship where it's more like 85/15 against. Not to mention, Rick Sternbach, albeit diplomatically, has been pretty clear that although he's really excited about the new film, he doesn't particularly like the new design. You don't have to be Fellini to read in between the lines of his comments.

Yeah, I think the viral marketing is already going on and they are juking the stats.

Ryan Church has been quoted as saying to TrekMovie.com:
We've built you a fine ship.
Nice... use a line from Titanic about the Titanic. That's not a particularly good harbinger.

However, in it's defense, nothing has changed about my opinion of the movie itself. I've been excited from the beginning and the latest trailer has made me even more so.

I don't see why one website geared towards one niche would be better or worse than a website geared toward another niche. Neither is representative of the group that's going to go to movies in May of next year: everyone.

I'm not sure that would be unbiased either.

People are still going to have an agenda, personal or otherwise. Its the average joe or jane moviegoer who's opinion really matters.

I like the new design. In fact, the more I look at it the more I like it.

Delusional is how I'd describe many of the comment here.

As for Viral marketing - I'll be amazed if we don't see it - maybe it's already out there and we need to find it...

So you really think Church is aware that he's built a lemon, and is therefore comparing it to the Titanic?

See, that's where you lose credibility - stating your personal opinion as fact. You are telling us that the new ship is the Titanic (presumably you're implying some kind of "sinking" metaphor). Whereas the reality is that your opinion of the ship - i.e. you don't like it - is as valid as mine - I do like it. The difference is I'm not trying to tell you how wrong you are.

People need to learn how to express their personal opinion without stating it as fact, because it isn't.

Yeah, and I hear Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox teamed up to flood the internet with naysayers in the hopes that it will cause the movie to fail...

...actually that's not true and I made that all up, but look how easy it was for me to do it.

But not particularly meaningful if you've never watched Titanic, I suspect. (I haven't, btw -- wasn't even slightly interested.) Did the line really originate there?

The sad thing is that I think CRA actually believes the bullshit he is writing...

So we'll have "I believe in James T. Kirk" banners floating around?

Followed by destroyed banners by Nero?

The sad thing is that I think CRA actually believes the bullshit he is writing...

If he doesn't believe himself, that leaves no one.

I'm a member of two of such sites (Foundation 3D and Scifi-Meshes) and the negative comments all come from 'Trek-fans'.

But you are just a paid lackey of the studio - as am I! We all lie ! TRUE fans hate all of this and only TRUE fans have a trueful opinion.

Which reminds me, my check from Paramount hasn't arrived yet...

All those posts claiming excitement for nothing. Ho hum... :(
