Vic Fontaine almost ruined DS9.

I've reached that point in my rewatch where Vic turns up.

I hate this character and the episodes he was in.

I can't imagine what they were thinking when the writers introduced this nonsense.

It's ridiculous how all the crew love him.

Terrible character. Almost ruined the show.

Discuss.

How does a holographic character whose in only an handful of episodes out of the entire run almost ruin DS9?

Love his singing because I like Frank Sinatra and I like when Star Trek meets the 20th century.

I really, really liked Vic when I was watching DS9 on its first run, in 8/9 grade.
I don't think he's quite as cool as I did then, but I still like the character.
We don't bat an eye at Worf being ga-ga over Klingon opera or Picard being all into classical music. I don't see why it would be odd that some people would be into Sinatra.

Hardly. It's their money.

And I don't care if they are wasting their own lives with their greed. That's up to them.

But when they ruin it for others by destroying something popular and well-known, then I have to express my dislike.

No skin off my nose. I generally avoid casinos. I just look at their lush lawns, sparkly lights, gorgeous furnishings, and attentive staff... and I remember what pays for all of it.
I don't care much about casinos as such, however I would like to visit Las Vegas just to look at it.

What I do care about are places with cultural importnce in music, such as the Cavern Club where The Beatles started and the Marquee in London where ALL famous bands played in the 60's and 70's. When such places of great cultural importance are destroyed by sheer greed and/or downright ignorance and stupidity, then I get mad.

Agreed. Especially when all they're building on the site is a glitzy modern eyesore.

Well sounds like the bridge is safe for now... but who knows what else they'll try to nick from Oakland? Does it even have any more sports franchises?

Well, the Oakland Seals, later on Californa Seals were dumped decades ago from the NHL.
But maybe in the future, Starfleet Academy will have the California Stars in NHL! :techman:

I'm not reading all six pages of this.

I'm staunchly anti-holodeck and I think Vic is terrific. He's in some of my favorite episodes.

(Why is Take Me Out to the Holosuite the best holodeck episode? Because it doesn't try to KILL anyone.)

And if you need me to say again how from an audience point of view Ezri completed Dax's story on DS9, I will. Ezri is wonderful.

I think that "Hollow Pursuits" and "Once Upon a Time" are among the few other holodeck Trek episodes that don't feature severe malfunctions.

Not sure if Trip getting preggers qualifies as a malfunction or not.

"Hollow Pursuits" definitely features severe malfunctions... just not of the holodeck specifically.

If the warp engines were as reliable as the holodeck safety systems, Starfleet's ships would be just sitting dead in space most of the time.

To be fair the holodeck safety systems seem to be about as reliable as the warp core ejection systems... ;)

I've said it before, I'll say it again...Starfleet could learn from Quark. (Or maybe more correctly, Rom.) The holosuites almost never had the kind of malfunctions that the holodecks do. In seven years, two problems. One was a console malfunction, and one was only caused by the station computer using up every bit of storage to save the physical patterns of the bridge crew.

TNG made the holodeck downright dangerous. It was nice that DS9 showed it as a commonly used and usually working mode of recreation. So it's not that low.

Yes, if I were the captain of the Enterprise I'd order the holodeck off limits until the next holodeck upgrade had a thorough trial in some other sucker's ship.

He'd charge too much and create a security risk.

I trust Quark to set prices for maximum profit - and that means his customers have to be able to afford them.
