Oh please I'm far from a purist Trekkie nor do I have a dogmatic loyalty to canon. I unlike most I think the TOS Enterprise is a fine design. If it's not broke don't fix it. That's my stance. Sorry I don't assimilate into this world view that. "It's 2018, modern audiences won't accept it!!!" Things can be updated to look better without completely redesigning it. Dr. Who and Star Wars do it just fine.

A fair opinion to have. I don't think they are going to "completely redesign" it. Just make a few tweaks here and there. Perhaps we will both be happy with that. :)

Yeah, I should have just let people have their opinions. When will I learn that purist Trekkies minds cannot be changed? Dogmatic loyalty to "canon" real world implications (dated aesthetics) be damned.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Same problem with TLJ right now, if you ask me. Fans think they are entitled to their show/movie being exactly what they desire it to be. Anything else is simply not acceptable.

I am almost as big a Star Wars fan as I am Trek, and I felt TLJ was fucking boring. However, I just walked out of the theater and went "oh well" and moved on.

Yeah I agree, they'll update the design, but it will still clearly be a constitution class at a glance.

A TOS Connie with TMP level detailing I think would work (just change nacelle pylon shape, I hate them, lmao)

If I had to guess, I'd say it won't just be the TOS Enterprise with new surfacing, but it won't be as drastic a change as the Kelvintimeline Enterprise either.

the KT Connie was very similar to the Refit, just a bit more rounded. Well and the nacelles were completely different.

As much as I was a fan of the Kelvinverse films for what they were...I was never a fan (of really any) of the design choices. They didn't make me want to burn a building down or flip a car in protest...but they definitely didn't appeal to me.

The link isn't working. But, with Spock being Michael's foster-brother, the Enterprise was bound to show up sooner or later. Or, even if not the Enterprise, it would be silly to keep avoiding showing the Constitution Class.

I treat the show like a visual reboot anyway, so whatever works. I'll say what I said before they showed us the Enterprise for the 2009 film: I don't think it'll look as much the same as some people want and it won't look as different as other people want.

I think it should look like it would fit in on Discovery and not stick out like a sore thumb.

UPDATE: So the guy on Reddit was apparently confused and he worked on the Discovery CG model, not the Enterprise. He doesn't know much about Trek and confused it.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if she showed up at some point...

I would be happy if it was a Connie class ship that received a different refit than the TMP Enterprise did.

That way, it can look different and updated and have an explanation.

It will. I guarantee it. I can't believe this still has to be explained. 1960s tech looks laughable in 2018.
I think you can combine 1960's design with current production 'values' and make it work. Though it's got me thinking about the intro to 'Discovery' itself. The draw board sketches look lacks something.

That's a bummer. I agree with you that the Big-E or some other Constitution class ship will show up on Discovery.

That's what people said before ENT IaMD episodes aired. It wasn't so. It wasn't laughable in DS9's tribble episode either. It looked just fine and futuristic in all of these episodes, especially the exteriors.

I agree. The design of the original Enterprise is not outdated in any way IMHO. That being said, the interior and the bridge stations in particular, would need some cosmetic tweaks.

With 2018 budgets they can make those walls metal and make the jolly rancher buttons LED's. ;)

I have a thought. A Constitution Class ship designed as if it were designed in the '60s except with a major motion picture budget, and be reminiscent of the aesthetic in 2001: A Space Odyssey...

... and explained away as a different type of refit like Ar-Pharazon suggested. It holds up, it's technically of the time, and can be explained away. It's sort of a clever way of paying tribute to the era without looking exactly the same.

If you look at it, the Discovery itself is based on a '70s design, so we're in that territory already.

2001 was a partial influence on the Kelvin Enterprise.
