VERY SHORT TREKS...

"Lower Decks" is I think light canon. As in some of it happened but likely not in a cartoony kind of way in how we see it on the show. Sort of like how Boimler and Mariner were not quite as over the top and cartoonish as we see on the show. Another good example I think would be from "Star Wars" in how they have taken stuff from Clone Wars and Rebels and added them to live action. I would even include season 1 of TNG. I think we are suppose to think that season 1 happened but it happened in away that was better written than what we saw.

"Skin a cat" - Didn't care for most of it, enjoyed the ending joke though.

"Holiday Party" - Really didn't like this one, a little too gross and mean spirited for me. Probably my least favorite.

"Worst Contact" - Could've been really good, Frakes is clearly having a fun time, but having a running booger joke as the premise just doesn't work.

"Holograms all the way down" - This one's great, good to see the Prodigy crew and DS9 get some love!

"Walk, don't run" - A good sendoff to these shorts. Tongue in cheek in a way that feels right for a celebration of TAS. I'm glad they ended on a higher note than they started, and the song is bop.

And more importantly, who is updating the holy writ?

We can never know that for sure. All we know is they live deep underground with nothing but Star Trek episodes to watch, and of course some supplies like food and water. They guard these copies in case CBS or anyone ever tries to destroy all the copies of all Trek and rewrite the canon. This way REAL Trek will be forever be protected by these brave guardians from any future attempts to change Trek.

The REAL canon will always exist as long as they are alive and looking over the episodes and movies. They have sacrificed their lives on the surface and time with their families to partake in this sacred duty. Anytime we see real canon be protected by attempts to change it like we saw with Discovery's failed attempt to turn Klingons into Orcs it is because they took action to save the real Klingons.

You and I watch very different Star Treks.

Well, yes. It is a sitcom which is always an elevated reality.

All the pushback TAS has gotten over the years (but really, never in the 70's or even most of the 80's) about "is it or isn't it canon" after TNG came on the air and The Great Bird started getting snarky. Now The Powers What Be flat out say "Lower Decks is totes canon" and the reaction is "Welllll... What do they know anyway?"

The thing about the infamous memo is not only did it “decanonize” TAS but parts of TOS and most of the TOS movies (presumably anything that GR didn’t personally produce), but most who claim TAS isn’t canon conveniently forget about that part.

This one was a lot of fun.

A show paying homage to what came before... a love letter. Or at least, that's what Tendi was attempting. The argument reminded me of the first one, "SKIN A CAT", with all of them getting offended at everything.

But the really fun part was the song. Love how it incorporated sounds from the show into it.

My wife and I have been singing the 'duty roster' part many times since we watched it.

Really loved this one.

The VERY SHORT TREKS overall were fun. I enjoyed them, and hope they do this again. Maybe this can be a thing every year.

For the most part it doesn't.

It doesn’t matter in the slightest. Or at least, it shouldn’t matter.

Quite how people get worked up about which things happened and didn’t happen in a fictional universe, I just don’t understand.

It doesn’t matter because none of it is real anyway. They are just stories. All stories.

Well it does matter a little when dealing with crossovers. Like if you wanted to bring Janeway back for example then the question would be. How ,much or how less should you include the stuff they had the character do on Prodigy. Prodigy being canon or not could impact how you would approach the character. Do you ignore it because the show is not considered to be part of her backstory or do you embrace it and what if you want to write something that really ignores the cartoon because let say maybe she got married to Chocatay.

Also as a writer do you need to depict Starfleet officers wearing those uniforms or do you go with something else? If canon never mattered then you could see stuff like Sisko not being mad at Picard in the pilot because you have decided that Picard never was turned into a Borg. Canon and Continuity does give you some framework so your not just pulling out character backstory left and right that never makes sense or having a universe that feels like one of those 50's sci-f i b-movies where they really don't bother with something like world building. The story is the story and it doesn't have to feel connected to anything other than itself.

Indeed, yes. The official status of story matters very, very, little. The enjoyment of the story is stronger than the official status.

Continuity has nothing to do with canon. Separate the two ideas and this will go easier.

And you know what? It could be an unofficial story and I might like it, and *gasp* even enjoy it!
