VERY SHORT TREKS...

Is this the flat earth was supported by 4 elephants and then turfles under them?
Something like that. The world sits on the back of a giant turtle, which is itself walking on the back of an even larger turtle, which is walking on the back of a larger turtle than that, and so on. The version I originally heard was written by Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time.

A well-known scientist (some say it was Bertrand Russell) once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"

Who would ever have thought this particular debate would reach such a fevered pitch as to rival only that of "Is Starfleet a military organization?"

Wow. That one was... actually pretty good. Laughed more than once, fulfilled the stated goal of celebrating a half-century since Star Trek was first animated, hadn't known Noël Wells sang.
