Very disappointing movie

Just going to quote myself from a while ago …

I’m tempted to say the whole thing was a big disappointment, but then again, my expectations were really low and I personally just never really liked the premise of doing a Trek outing focussing on Section 31 or Mirror Georgiou to begin with. My one hope was that it would be so bad and schlocky that it would be entertaining that way, but no, it’s just veeery boring, uninspired and by-the-numbers.

That said, I liked some of the characters (mainly Alok, Quasi, Garrett and the little we saw of Melle and Virgil) and would absolutely not mind seeing them again. Hopefully with a much better script, more capable directing and without the baggage of it being the “Michelle Yeoh show”. Make it “The Search for the Emperor” for all I care and have Yeoh cameo at the end.

I still wonder if in the hands of a more capable writer and director it could have at least become a competent movie and not the baffling mess we got. Ultimately the movie’s most unforgivable flaw is its mediocrity. Who but the most ardent fans will even remember this thing years down the road? Heck, fans are barely talking about it now. I mean, there’s only so many ways to express how much it sucked.

It was very strange, and not something I would revisit. Not even Michelle Yeoh being her kickass self was able to save that movie.

A better writer and director would not have changed anything, because the entire premise of S31, whether in TV series form or TV movie form, was flawed. The entire production was rushed and not thought out well at all. And it was basically just a vanity project for Yeoh.

And I saw so much potential in the concept despite the shoddy execution. As I've said before, I would absolutely love to read the 10 completed scripts for the aborted season of the Section 31 television show to see how that story was supposed to play out over 10 episodes instead of being scrunched and condensed into a 90-minute movie. There's no way that doesn't go wrong. The concept itself, Michelle Yeoh and the fans all deserved better. Maybe it came down to timing, but they should have just thrown out the story that they used and focused on a page one rewrite with a new story.
