Vermont...

Seems like a nice place. I was actually thinking about going up there some time for a vacation and look around.

Anyone go there for a vacation trip or live there that would have any suggestions?

Go in the fall if you have the chance. The leaves are absolutely gorgeous. I'm told some of them even turn pink, but I've never seen any.

(Of course, being from an area where the leaves don't really change that much, I'm impressed by any color changing.)

I have family in Vermont, and have regularly visited them there. I'd also agree that the state is most beautiful during the fall, and if you plan on visiting, you'd be hard pressed to find a better time to do so.

My mother runs a Bed & Breakfast in the Rutland area. It's a pretty nice state. If you go in the winter there's skiing, of course; in the summer, try the alpine slides at Pico mountain.

yeah, all of the New England area is spectacular in the fall.

Vermont has some good skiing too, if you're into that.

ETA:

there's lots of lakes in Vermont. plenty of places to fishing, swimming, and boating if you're thinkin' of goin' during the Summer.

I suppose I should have mentioned the winter sports, but they're not my thing at all, so it slipped my mind.

I go there camping there every summer. The camping is part of an outdoor astronomical/telescope convention; largest of its kind. My Dad and I once left my brother at a gas station in Rutland on our way there, and it was two hours before we noticed. We had two state troopers pull us over and ask us if we forgot him. They laughed and went on their way. Mind you, it's 14 hours of driving from where we are.

I love the Burlington area (around the University of Vermont, and Burlington downtown). The downtown has a real European feel, and the campus is gorgeous. Lots of great hiking, too.

I spent a week on vacation outside Rutland in the 1970s. I thought it was a pretty neat place and I particularly enjoyed hiking in the Green Mountains (it was July and I was in my 20s). I know I'd certainly go back again.

The place has probably changed a lot since I was there though.

My brother and his family live in Richmond, which is right outside of Burlington. I'll give you his address and you can crash there. Just show up, he won't mind...

I second the recommendation to visit during the early autumn (mid October would be perfect), but unless you love people, don't go to a bed and breakfast. I went to one with my girlfriend at the time, and it was like the antiromance. Bloody family style dinner with two other couples, a scheduled bed time, etc... Find a nice Marriott or Holiday Inn and retain your independence. And make your lady (assuming you're not vacationing alone) scream 'till morning without worrying about waking up the whole place or offending the owners.

is that the Stellafane convention?

Yep. A lot of locals don't know about it though, and it's one of the biggest events in their backyard. But it's getting more and more recognition, especially due to thing about the prison from a few years back. You can look it up on Wikipedia, and the first thing you see is my Dad's old scope; the blue and orange one.
