'Variety' reviews Star Trek XI

The Variety review was the one I was most interested in reading. Variety reviews have been fairly positive about Trek movies. The only Trek movie they panned was ST5 (and rightfully so, IMO), and INS and NEM got lukewarm reviews. And Variety went against the grain and gave TMP a positive review (and rightfully so again, IMO).

So at the very least a positive review at Variety has meant box office success. And I think this is by far the best review they have given a Trek movie.

Todd MacCarthy is the same critic which reviewed TMP, so he is been there a while.

well , at least we know the critics like it. now , lets hope we all will as well.i can remember many movies the critics loved that bombed at the box office.

I can't think of a single example of a well-reviewed big-budget summer tentpole move that did poorly - so that bodes very well for Trek XI.

superman returns was a summer blockbuster that was critically acclaimed and it did very poor box office. so bad in fact that the proposed sequel was scrapped!

I'd rather have a good movie than a hit, if it has to come down to that, which I don't think it will.

Yeah, honestly, I enjoyed Superman Returns, and it still made over $200 million dollars... but guess that just wasn't quite enough.

I haven't read it as I'm staying spoiler-free but thought you may like to read it.

How dare this douche say that Classic Trek was "stodgy" and "square"...it's really amazing that this sucky-ass stodge-fest has been popular since it debuted.

This review is propoganda I tell you...it seems like too good of a review..barely a negative statement...

ONE WORD: PAYOLA!

I like this review. A lot. A bit OVERLY optimistic to be frank...considering how fickle we Trekkers often are with our own product...but good reviews usually make big-budget films perform better. More kudos like this and my $215 million prediction for the domestic box office may have to be adjusted upwards.

But for its time forty years ago it was really sophisticated. Times change.

it wasn't "stodgy". it was "square" though

Actually, I was thinking "stodgy" suited it better than "square." It's certainly stagey and mannered.

But so is most TV of the 1960s and 70s. Just the style of the era.

Of course.

Most TV of the 1960s didn't remain alive until the early part of this century, telling stories using essentially the same style of performance and storytelling they started out with in the mid-1960s.

Because it is - just flat-out is. "Stodgy" might almost have been coined to describe TOS.

Well that's your opinion and while I respect your opinon I don't respect it's contents. Yeah I know that doesn't make much sense...I forgot where I heard that bit o' rubbish. Anyhoo, I find some posters around here to be quite Stodgy....aka BORING...you know who you are! wink wink

I'll concede square..OK fine it's always been square..but Star Trek has not been boring. Stodgy doesn't mean the same thing as mannered or stagey.

Your anti-Tos-ness is so predictable...can you try to switch it up a bit to keep this interesting...yawn!

Well that's your opinion and while I respect your opinon I don't respect it's [sic] contents. Yeah I know that doesn't make much sense.

No it doesn't, but that's because you parroted it while dropping out the bit that you appear to either not to understand or to find inconvenient.

"I respect your right to express an opinion, but I don't respect the content of your opinion."

That's the way it works.

I mean - to use an extreme example in the hopes that it will penetrate - it would be un-American for me not to respect the right of, for example, an "Aryan Nation" skinhead to say racist things (you know, the First Amendment, freedom of speech, etc.) but unnecessarily PC and in fact really stupid of me to respect him for his racist thinking or to respect the content of what he says.

Got that, now?

Oh did I hit a nerve?? :) Did I not quote the great starship correctly? I left my Polaris handbook at home can u cut me some slack and lighten up bub..I'm just fuckin around with you but since you're so friggin serious all the time............No I don't understand can you explain it again and again and again at how you achieve your rationalization to be so arrogant AND STODGY!

The only thing that needs penetration around here is YOU...and I think that will loosen you up a bit...literally and figuratively...

And don't reply to me at all if you're going to cherry pick what the hell you reply to...save it...GOT THAT NOW? I love you!

Did you just threaten to anal-rape Dennis?

I cross a lot of lines but I would never go so far as to threaten to rape someone...besides I don't even have the right equipment unless it's purchased ;) :p So it was just a mere suggestion and most certainly not an offer LOL.

Oh did I hit a nerve?

No, you simply made an error.

Did you just threaten to anal-rape Dennis?

Another glorious day on the Internet.

Go 'head and keep on picken them cherries...probably the only cheeries yous be gettin anyway. :guffaw:

Well at the rate they're going with merchandising the new film, I'm sure you'll be able to get a Star Trek-branded strap-on soon enough. That should keep everybody happy.
