Yeah, you'd expect there to be plenty of whirlwinds in Kansas.

There was a whirlwind in my backyard this afternoon, but no books came flying out of it, though I suppose that would require a bit more cleanup.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I just have one quick Vanguard question,
what was the relationship between the Shedai and the Tholians?
before you tell me to go back and read STT, I want to say that I already have and I just want to get someone to jog my memory for me.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Simple answer, we're not sure, at least as of STT.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

It's an open question as of the end of Summon the Thunder.

It won't be by the end of Reap the Whirlwind....

But I've said too much already. :D

Befriend your local comic shop! Australian bookstores ordering in airfreight import copies of new ST novels get them from the same distributor (Diamond) as US comic shops. Thus, Galaxy in Sydney gets its first batch of new ST novels just a few hours after US stores take delivery of that week's comics.

Indeed, apparently there was one way out in Western KS last week that destroyed an entire town. Those Shedai are no joke. ;)

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Nice to know that although the book seems to have reached Sydney, it still hasn't made its way to any of the Borders in Southern California yet... :(

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I gotta a question. What is the thought process/reason for the Sagittarius crew uniforms? And are they the "jumpsuits" we've seen in TOS or something different?

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

^ Think of the utility jumpsuits worn in TOS by people like engineers, transporter operators, mechanics, etc. There are some decent reference images at Memory Alpha.

As for the reason, it's a matter of captain's preference. Captain Adelard Nassir is a laid-back kind of guy; because his ship's crew is small --- 14 people --- diverse, and very close-knit, they often don't stand on formalities. They all eat together, share the same common shower and head, and spend most of their time far beyond the established boundaries of Federation space.

The Sagittarius is a long-range outrider/scout, and the lifestyle aboard the ship isn't like that of a 400-person heavy cruiser such as the Enterprise or the Endeavour. This was one of the key goals of the Vanguard series --- to show that life in and out of Starfleet in the 23rd century had variety, and that even then there was room in Starfleet for diversity of all kinds.

Whew, looks like my stores have the book now. Good thing, cause I just got my 30% off coupon for this weekend, and just finished AotF. Perfect timing all around.

If KRAD is watching BTW. AotF was every bit as good as its reputation around here. Great job!

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

WOW! I've begun to read Reap The Whirlwind tonight and picked it up about six hours ago....this is fantastic! And the minipedia at the back of the book....freakin' awesome! I swear though, when the series ever reaches its end, it'll probably have more cast and recurring and cameo characters than the entire six days of '24' and it takes forever for me to scroll through those. Dave, collecting that info was pretty awesome. Can't wait to get through and finish this one...it's starting off strong, something I've come to appreciate from "Mack The Knife". Thanks Dave.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

I'm surprised I was able to find a copy yesterday. I usually don't find a new book for the next month until after the 21st.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Finally picked mine up yesterday and, like Summon the Thunder, had to jump through flaming hoops to get the damned thing. But the right amount of complaining to Borders' customer service line and talking to the District Manager of the store I went to first, I got that and a gift card for my troubles.

Makes you wonder what that store has planned for Harry Potter release day....

Glad you're enjoying it so far.

As for the minipedia in the back of the book, that started off as a strictly internal project, something that I compiled for myself, Marco, Dayton, and Kevin. Late in the production process, Marco suggested we include it in the back of Reap The Whirlwind, so we made some minor edits (to remove spoilers and citations to materials the readers wouldn't have, such as the series bible), and here it is.

Re: Vanguard: Reap the Whirlwind excerpt is up

Does the series bible have more information than has been revealed in the books so far?

Where else would they write it? If each novel is progressing towards some kind of plot arc culmination, as has been suggested, the official contributors do need to know where they're heading.
